Yeah the vented wastegate is a love hate relatonship... more power but loud as F and around here loud is a not a good thing. I am contemplating plumbing it back in so I can WOT in peace. Maybe what I'll do is get it dynoed, plumb it back in, re- dyno so I can make an informed decision on whether to keep it vented or not.

The setup is good. I was runing 15 psi and that turbo kicks in real quick... Perfect for street use. My mechanic loves it, actually at first he thought the turbo was brand new because of the condition. The bad side to this story is that I had to get my engine torn apart because after the rebuild it kept leaking coolant from the overflow :(. But the turbo set up is great. :bigthumb:

yea the vented gate is good for 20whp up top so it does help. do an open cut out for the wastegate. i heard some of the dsm guys using this setup and it would work great. that way when you need the extra hp it is there.

Never heard of that so I'd looked it up and came up with this pic:

Now I'm not comprehending what the benefits are....

Put a small muffler on the wastegate outlet if noise is a problem.

smg944 08-21-09 06:08 AM

benefits of the cut out is just to not have the noise all the time. you can open and close it when you would like. but the vented wastegate does account for a good amount of power. i lost exactly 20whp at the same boost level from your kit to my current kit which has a re routed gate.

I'm gonna look into as well. My only concern with that is that it may be visible from a distance as the muffler may stick out at the bottom, but I'm sure there are ways of getting around that.

Thanks!

ok it's research time.... Not grasping how one goes about closing it.

Yeah i saw your thread where you compared dyno charts between your old set up and your new. Anyway enough about this don't want to derail your thread :)

great vids man! keep it up as I live vicariously through you guys ha ha

my buddy did have a vid of me and the viper. he didnt catch the run since he couldnt pull the camera in time. but here is a quick clip of us at the light after the run. we were going to possibly do a dig run but there was minmal room up front.

Man, guys like you should have a fulltime cameramount w/ functioning camera (duh) to capture these events :) Good work, love the vids!!!

Wow I didn't think it would be so much loss from plumbing it back in. Was that number in your signature with or without it vented? Did it affect the spool time as well?

smg944 08-24-09 03:40 PM

no effect on spool time. just a loss of power. i dynoed 427whp with a vented wg. and 407whp with a plumed in wg. i can probably overlay the before and after dyno.

Gohan3rdrift 08-24-09 10:00 PM

Killa!!!

Slow Rotor 08-25-09 05:31 AM

Wait so if you plumb an external gate back into the exhaust it causes a power loss?

If you don't mind that would be appreciated :) . I am very curious to see where the loss accrued at.

here are the dyno graphs. it was actually 421whp. but you can see i make a slight more midrange with the wg plumed in. thats always the trade off for more top end power.

RotaryBuddha 08-25-09 08:51 PM

Thanks for posting it. Nice to see the difference.

thanks for posting that! you made up my mind... I am plumbing it in! Seriously bro I have been wrestling with this decision for along time now.

Yes the vented wastegate yields a higher HP number within the last 500 RPMs, but it also yields less in the midrange. In other words the "area under the curve" remains about the same. It's something I didn't catch on your other thread until you overlapped them. As I used to think that it was a TOTAL loss in power through out the powerband, but I see that's not the case.

It's a no brainer now :D
