93 MX-5 vs STI

driving down 15-501 at 2130 i change lanes to turn onto interstate 40, about 7 car lenghts till i need to stop a black STI cuts me off cause he wants to be "first" to the light

Im like whatever he just a stupid collage student, then he starts revving his engine and looking at me in his mirrors, im like WTF does he want to race? Only thing i have done for power is a lightweight flywheel, otherwise it is all suspention mods.

WTF i want to see how i fare vs a STI, so the light turns green and he dumps the clutch and chirps all his tires so i was hoping to see what it can do,i smoothly release the clutch, using all ive learned from autocross, and turn on to the interstate

It is a two lane so as im following him i merge into the other lane so im kinda behind and slightly to his right.

what happen next cought me off guard, i know he had it floored, no car sould like that at part throttle, and his BOV was goin off between shifts, but I was passing him, as i went by, he looks at me through his passenger window like WTH!?

I was allready doing 95 then had to start slowing down for traffic on 40. he stayed on my *** till i got a few miles down the road and took an exit, he followed me, however once i hit the roads where i grew up, every turn made him fade further into my rear view mirror.

I had though for sure he would had pulled away from me on the on-ramp. If this is how STI's accelerate, then I am very dissapointed. ( i think my year was rated at 118 flywheel HP) they will be further back as soon as my turbo come in the mail.

Nice kill. You do have weight on him probably. The STi is still 2900-3200 lbs i believe. And its only got 300 horse/ftlbs to push around. Plus its AWD, so he loses some in the center, rear, and front LSD. Plus that car is kinda a pig. It will however handle like mad, with the right driver.

Again, props on the kill, keep it up!

good kill, it seems the sti driver doesn't know how to drive or i don't know what, even if the sti driver doesn't know how to drive he should've smoke you but don't know i wasn't there but in the curves if you have more experience then thats a different story. nice kill

A stock Miata with a flywheel isn't going to be anywhere CLOSE to an STI... Those cars are fast, a Miata isn't.

You'd have to have (I'd say) around 180whp to hang with one in a legit race.

^I'd say even more than that. Closer to 200 wheel horse.

Well, let's do some sketchy math:

Miata = 2100lbs
STI = 3300lbs

The STI has 300HP to the flywheel, which gives it 11lbs per HP... To MATCH 11lbs per HP, the Miata would need to produce 190HP to the flywheel.

So yeah, probably 170whp would get a Miata pretty close to an STI in a street-race. 200whp would likely put the Miata easily in the lead.

i know he had the Hp to weight thing on me, idk if he blew a coupling or something cause by the look on his face he was giving it all he had..

I kinda want to find someone who know how to drive and race them, it kinda sucks when someone trys to race and they cant drive for ****, its like putting a F1 driver in a metro and a dumbass in a viper and the geo wins...

ive had several people in "high performance" cars tailgate me when i drive from fayetteville to durham or charlotte (350z's and such). When i hit anything that requires to turn my wheel more then10 degrees and i see them tapping their brakes and end up way behind me. I take back roads all the way there and ive driven them enough over the past three years to know the details of the twisty parts.

i once had a C5 vette owner behind me then i hit a couple turns that have a yellow 35 sign, i lost him after 2 of those turns. later i had stoped further down the road to get gas and he drove by. i saw him pull a u-turn and come back to the station and asked me what i had done to the engine. at that point, he was shocked when i told him nothing, but suspenton and tires. he said That was the fastest anyone had ever pulled away from him

lol the only time i had been passed by a car where there were turns, was back in aug, when a group of miata owner when up to run on the blueridge parkway. several of us have CB' in the cars, so the guy who was tailing out pack, said, hey we need to pull over to let someone pass, we pulled into one of those senic overlooks, and watched a lambo countash (sp) fly by. I will never forget the sound that thing made.... almost a good as a 4-rotor

lol collage..... has anybody thought about the possibility that this may have been a wrx? with sti styleing and badges? I used to have a gc8 with 260hp(2.5rs turboed) and when I raced a wrx with close to the same hp.. I demolished him... I've also beaten them in both my non-turboed and turboed fc's, can't wait to see what my fd will do!
Anyhow I have driven gc8's wrx's and sti's (and my buddies 500hp sti) and almost all years of miatas (I started getting pissed when the miatas would beat my gc8 in autocross so I drove a few to see how it was so fast) anyhow there is no way that a miata of any sort (with no engine mods) could take an sti.... a wrx however may have a tough time on the highway... they are built like bricks... power falls off around 90mph thanks to drag/shifting to 4th/and awd....
Other theory.... the sti was messing with you.... I raced an sti in my gc8 and the dude just sat next to me on the hw, I could hear his bov slightly chirping... that really pissed me off..lol.

WRX guy could have given you the same WTH look. Most ricers severely under-estimate the MX-5.

Still, even a **** poor driver in an STi should have had no problem pulling away from you on the highway. I've driven lightly modded Miatas and they're just no comparison. Short of major engine work or forced induction, it's pretty implausible.

I'm theorizing a riced out WRX that was probably weighed down with a lot of useless crap.

my stock 04 wrx wagon was fast as hell. i smoked a late 90's civic with decent mods, when i had 2 passengers and 125lbs of stereo equiplment in the back. that car died though becuase blonde women are allowed to drive big trucks.

Http://photos.yahoo.com/gregowen420 <---- pics of a nice Wrx i destroyed in like 10 secs

if he was racing (which i wasn't there so i have no idea) then you killed him, a kill is a kill. BUTTTT

i would NOT base you vs an sti off of that race. the guy couldn't drive or had something terribly wrong. a miata runs a roaring what? low 15 with a badass driver? a sti run's low 13's, high 14's with a shitty shitty shitty driver.... so there was something up. but yes you did win fair and square.

also before any morons try to bring up how the miata handles so much better, yes they do pretty well with not much in a auto x event, but this was a drag race. so save it.

no, it was him hitting the rev limiter in different gears that told me he was racing...

kinda hard since i have never posted a vid on youtube, and if the vid came from the sti driver, that explains why i beat him

I dont care much now, as of last week i have installed a turbo kit onto my miata, its fun breaking traction in second, and im looking on taking it to the drag strip very soon
