I'm just leaving soccer practice in my 88 rx7 n/a and this kid on my team is following me in his (claimed 370hp) 1980 z28 camaro. I didn't think i had a chance in the world in beating him, but i gave it a shot anyway. After a stop sign i let him get within around 10ft of my bumper then i hit it. I hear his engine drown me out, so i know he is on it. When i hit second gear i was about 2 car lengths ahead and by the time i wound it out i was around 4-5 car lengths ahead. So much for the 370hp. His engine is brand new, so it isn't broken in yet but i still figured he should have eat me alive (both are auto's). What do you guys think? I'm sure once the engine breaks in he will destroy me, but at the moment i felt pretty proud of my rex.

 

Well everyone claims they have more horsepower then they have, specially chevy guys lol. depends what kind of motor he has, i just got my rx7 but im surprised by it they are reletivy quik, i would say weight advantage is a big plus on your side, with a 5 speed you would still prolly keep up with him even if he has 300 horsepower, i was never a fan of that body style camaro. If your interested in racing him again i would suggest intake exhaust to give you a better chance

 

If a HS kid with a hand-me-down example of one of the slowest V8 camaros ever makes 370HP, Peter Jennings will jump out of the TV and crip-walk through my living room.

 

So your na auto outran a chevy 350. Does this kids carb work? I am going to have to call BS unless his car was not in working order or he was letting off at the 30mph speed limit because he was scared to get a ticket.

 

I think you had a chance. Those 1980 Camaro engines (if he got one of those) didn't produce a lot of horsepower and the Camaro itself is heavy (between 3,300 and 3,600 lbs).

I wouldn't be surprised if a stock 1980 Z28 produced less than 180 hp at the flywheel. I believe it was around 190 at the most.

 

This one is the best. A 1980 Camaro that has probably 130-150 hp to the wheels claims 370 hp, while a 146 hp automatic non-turbo beats it by 4 cars..... The sad part is, it probably happened that way. Good kill man.

 

Yup. I wouldn't be surprised at all. Late 70's and early 80's weren't good years for the American "pony" cars. Smog restrictions didn't help the situation.

I think 5.0's (306 and 302) didn't even produce 200+ horsepower until the mid 80's. I could be wrong though.

 

A 1980 Camaro Z28 was complete garbage. They do make I think 190 crank hp. I looked around on the internet and I found it listed as 0-60 in 9.7 seconds. That's only .1 seconds faster than my mom's old Kia Sephia.

the 1980 Camaro was offered with either a 190hp 350 or a 155-165hp 305 mated to a 3 speed automatic.

The third generation of Camaros debuted in 1982 as truly all new designs. They were the first Camaros built without front subframes or leaf-spring suspensions. The front end was now held up by MacPherson Struts and the rear used a long torque arm and coil springs. Engine choices were all new for 1982. At the bottom of the performance scale, buyers could order a Camaro with a version of GM's "Iron Duke" 2.5 liter four cylinder engine rated at a pathetic 90 bhp. Engine options included a 2.8 liter V6 rated at 112 bhp (which was the base engine in the Berlinetta), or a four-barrel carbureted 5.0 liter (305 cid) small block V8 rated at 145bhp (which was the base engine in the Z28). Optional in the Z28 was a "Cross-Fire Injection" (Throttle Body-Injected) version of the 5.0 V8 which was rated at 165bhp. The carbureted 5.7 could be mated to a manual or automatic transmission, but the Cross Fire 5.7 was available with an automatic only.
