88 GTU vs. 2004 Jetta GLI

Ok so it's 12:30 AM and I'm coming back from a friend's house, when I notice some kind of sedan rolling next to me. So we line up at this light and I rev it slightly, but it's loud as hell b/c I have dual Apexi N1s. The guy is driving a Volkswagon Jetta GLI, with the 6 speed and 180hp 1.8T motor (I checked, and they run something like a 15.2). Later I found out it was stock.

The light turns green and he launches. I didn't realize he was serious about racing though so I just did a normal start. I caught up to him though and we're both going 55mph down 4 lane road with very little traffic. I downshift into second and we both hit it at the same time. I jump him but then his turbo spools and I stop pulling away, but he can't close the gap. I finish out second at almost 70 mph, shut down, and flies past me. Then we run again from about 60. I'm in third. He hits it before I do (no honking or anything) and I go to maybe 75 or 80 and he's got a carlength on me, but I'm having trouble closing the gap. He kept pulling to 90 or more but I had already shut down.

Finally we get onto the interstate, go for a few miles and then he starts exiting off. It's out of my way a bit but I decide to follow. At the end of the exit is a traffic light. Through the light the road goes straight and then veers somewhat sharply to the left. So I'm waiting for the light, I've got my **** revved, and I launch at 6500rpm. I slipped it slightly--not a complete drop--and I feel the familiar sensations of clutch chatter, wheel hop, and chirping tires. I absolutely destroyed him off the line. I did a 0-30ish pull and he was a couple car lengths behind me when I shut down. We pulled over and talked a little bit after that and he was a pretty cool guy. He's planning to buy a turbo upgrade apparently. We exchanged numbers and I might cruise with him sometime.

Good kill. Buddy of mine has a mildly modded one (turbo upgrade, but stock sucky I/C) that we ran for fun at the 1/8th. I had him in the launch but he's got much better top end.

Mods are street port, clutch & flywheel, header, high flow cat, Apexi N1 duals, etc.

The nitrous kit is just sitting around right now. I still need a WOT switch and an external nitrous pressure gauge (besides the one on the bottle), bottle heater, and a couple safety switches. I got leaky shocks right now and I kinda think I should spend my money on that... I dunno. I could probably just buy a WOT switch and run it without all the other ****, but I don't know if that's a good idea.

ummm...

ok no offense dude... but thats pretty sucky, are u sure u have a street port... cause i can pull on a stock 210hp Type s rsx.... and i just have headers and no cats and intake.... so umm i dunno man, i might have a street port but yeah.....
oh yeah, you are gunna reck your car launching at 6500, thats just stupid, a good hard launch for me is TOPS of like 3000 or 3500... anyways.... take it easy, clutch slipping and chattering is actually bad if u didnt know that....

anyways still a good kill, keep killin the v dubs

I myself encountered a guy I recognized on the freeway who recently bought a 1.8 GLI (or GTI I dunno which, or even the difference between them). I having fun with him and what not, and he didn't seem to be much faster then me with my 88' GXL. He was following me at one points and went to pass me in the right lane, and I downshifted and started to hit it in 3rd and he did not pull on me that hard at all, even with the his advantage of me not punching it until he was almost right beside me.

After the little freeway encounter he happened to be going to the same exact place I was going in the neighboring town, and we talked a little and he asked if I was running a TII and I said no. And then he told me he was running 22lbs of boost too.
