When is an intake not an intake

How big does an intake tube need to be mostly invisible to the engine and not affect the power band?
The mazdatrix ep car has what looks to be An 8 to 12 inch duct to a box.
I also wonder how much filter location matters. I would think having the filter as close to the throttle plates would be less restrictive than at the end of a pipe

Mazda specs a 100-120mm tube for a P port 12A which was 265hp. so scale that as needed.

if the filter flows enough, its location doesn't matter. you do want to feed it cool air, and it needs to actually be able to filter.

the old IMSA cars ran a filter box, pretty much in the same place as all the EFI cars did, with sometimes an extra filter at the bumper.
