it looks like he has slicks on those wheels. im guessing that he drove to the event with street tires, swap them out and forgot to torque down the lug nuts since the lug bolts are still there.

Thats strange. if they were the wrong threads. the threads would at least be stripped while he was tightening down or wouldnt go all the way in. which he would notice since the wheels would be loose.

Not necessarily. There are some metric/imperial combinations that are pretty close. However, without knowing exactly what lug nuts were used, we can only speculate (that the current thought is that he didn't get metric lugs).
