Tires

Hey guys,

I just had a few questions about what tires have you guys used. I've got a 1982 rx7 and I'm racing in autocrosses in the Austin Area. Right now I'm running the worst possible road tire that have been on my car since the late 90's. I'm getting huge tire deflection in the corners and on the slaloms. Basically, I'm looking for a cheap autocross tire. I'm a college student right now, so money is a limit. Any suggestions or anyone know where I can get some cheap take-offs. Thanks

Chris

I've been using Sumitomo HTR200s, 215/50/13 for a couple of years now. $48.00 each and I'm taking down 95% of the Miatas I come across at autocrosses. Of course a set of Hoosiers would do me a lot better, but I've got a wife and 3 kids that suck the funds out of the account as fast as I can get them in there.

Look into the Dunlop Direzza Z1 Sport Star Specs. They are better in just about every regard than the Falken Azenis which were king of the street (not counting DOT R-comp) tires not long ago. They are very reasonably priced as well. These will be my next tires once I kill off my RT-615s in another track day or two.

If you're looking for really cheap, as said above, get some used race rubber. You can pick up real R-comp tires that have been used by race teams for cheap cheap. There are a number of vendors who specialize in nothing but used race rubber. GRM did an article about this a few months back IIRC.

Kumho tires are good bang for the buck. See if the new Ecsta XS comes in your size. They're geting good reviews - and consideration by myself.

Dunlop Direzza Z1 Star Specs. Hands down the cheapest tire I have used for the level of performance it provides. I have used RE01-R's, AD07's, KDW2's, Federal 595s, and a couple others. For the price, the star specs are king.

The hot street tires for auto-x right now are the Kumho Ecsta XS, Bridgestone RE-11, and Toyo T1R.
