SCCA classing
I'm putting an 86 Sport back together for the purpose of Autocross and any other events I can find. Basically, I want to know which class to shoot for: CSP or STS2? I'm slowly replacing components with "better than stock, but equivalent for classing", starting with the suspension, engine (rebuilding my own), and brakes.
Does it change my class if I use a S5 motor in my S4, or mild streetport?
Can I use a GXL LSD, SAFC, or S5 ECU and still be stock?
I'm going to try to unstick the 5/6 Ports, but if I remove them, whats the impact on classing?
I understand the language on the SCCA site, but the application to the rotary has me a little fuzzy on what is allowed. I've been lurking for a while, but noone has addressed this stuff.

Your best bet is to order a copy of the current rulebook ($15 at an event or through the SCCA website) and go over the rules of the classes you're interested in and the modifications allowed.
If you change to a motor that was not available in that model year you're going straight into the modified classes.
ECU, LSD and other changes you mentioned would be ok in a SP class. I don't know much about the rules for STx classes as I haven't bothered to read that section in detail (my car currently runs in SM2 but I've pondered the idea of running in ASP so I've gone over the SP rules and the SM/SM2 in detail).
I know there is an active (or was a few years ago) autocross region up in Fairfax so if you happen to be there it would probably be easiest to swing by an event on one of the coming weekends and find one of the staff (or somebody with a similar car) to discuss classing with.
I think most of the folks here who read this forum and autocross run FDs or modified FB/FCs (think they run in DM? or DSP? for the FB and BSP for the FC).

I know NA FC/FBs go to CSP or FP (unless they changed the prepared classing without telling me). If I was going to start off again (prior to gutting car) I would shoot for STS2. It is a new class and people are still getting cars put together. So you would have a good time starting out. You would not have to worry about racing slicks like in CSP. Any streetport/change of engine year would put you to a mod class. I am not sure of 5/6th port removal. More than likely not legal.

The update/backdate rule for engines was closed this year, because of the Frankencivics which showed up at the nationals. I believe they are no longer legal.
You play with the ports, you will not be in ST, probably as stated before prepared.
