SCCA Autocross Class FD RX7
Good morning all,
I would like to autocross my FD. However, it has some mods that departs from it's AS class. After being put to sleep (on numerous occasions) from reading the SCCA rules; I just can't make any sense out of it. My goal is to accurately classify the car; not that it (or I for that matter) would compete in nationals. Therefore, I seek the advise from this group! Can you help assess which class this car would run in? The specifics are: 94 FD Touring, MB stock suspension rebuilt engine with 2,500mi (with full rat's nest - no simplified rat's nest) 99 efini sequential turbo hollowed cat (will replace with hi-flow cat soon) r1 dual oil coolers ast deleted open intake (2 narrow K&N air filters) efini y-pipe greddy hard pipes blitz SMIC front strut tower brace (not factory; think it was a cusco aluminium brace) fluidyne rad 2000 Type RZ wheels: front 235/45ZR17 rear 255/40ZR17 Thanks again for helping me assess the car and make sense of the 2016 rule book! Technically, you would be in Super Street Mod (SSM) because the '99 spec turbos although stock Mazda components were never sold in the US.
Really, you should be in A Street Prepared (ASP) as long as your rebuilt motor is not ported and has stock internals. |

Im in ASP but after installing Ohlins, pfc ecu, and 99 turbos, I should be in SSM

In Virginia beach there is a group of guys that run a local class which is basically street modified class with street tires. Just run that and have fun.

There isn't a lot of ASP drivers locally. So sometimes I automatically get bumped in a higher class. But it's a tough class, I'm not going to lie. But I'm not far behind. I'm actually have competing times with BSP like mazdaspeed miatas. I'm literally a second or two behind drivers in that class raw time.

Yes, I use the Garmin VIRB XE (Auto Racing Bundle). The bundle comes with an OBD module that records a lot more info.

I have some similar modifications and i've been running in ASP. I've been fairly competitive; what keeps me back is not having a set of Hoosier A6s yet. Even then, there is an STI in ASP with hoosiers and our times are very similar. I need some more camber upfront; does anyone have a good recommendation on adjustable camber plates that will play nice with my HKS Hipermax IV GTs? FD RX-7 is not strut front suspension (thank god), so we can use the stock front lower control arm front eccentric adjuster to add camber. If you already have this stock available camber maxed out (around -2.5 at stock height) you will have to functionally or actually change the lengths of upper and/or lower suspension arms. In ASP you are allowed to replace any *suspension* bushing with offset bushings (so you can do upper and/or lower). SuperPro has offset upper and lower bushings to add more camber to the front of the FD- http://www.superpro.com.au/find/supe.../cid-999500856 Or you can make your own- https://www.rx7club.com/suspension-w...shings-941277/ In addition to offset suspension bushings, in ASP you may substitute aftermarket upper OR lower control arm to change camber (but not both) and the changed arm is NOT allowed to change the roll center (by moving ball joint location). For the FD you will probably then use some of the aftermarket adjustable upper arms. As far as I know the lower arms available correct for roll center as well. |

I've been using go pros but I would certainly consider upgrading to the virb if the data is good! For my FD, I only capture recorded speed, lat-G's, lap times, total times, heading, course map+position. On my MINI Clubman, the OBD2 module captures RPM, MAF, Engine Load, Coolant Temp, throttle/brake data, etc. I prefer the VIRB over the GoPro because of the data it captures then displayed as overlays on the video. I also found the video quality and options to be superior to the GoPro (3 or 4). The editing software (VIRB Edit) is fairly straight forward and easy to use. You can also customize the gauges and arrange them to suit your needs. It won me over just for the course map! Remember that our cars are not OBD2 compliant, or OBD1 for that matter! We only have the diagnostic port in the engine bay so the OBD2 module that comes with the VIRB Auto Racing bundle will not even fit. The OBD2 module only works with OBD2 compliant vehicles. To follow up with the previous post about VIRB data, here's my latest auto-x run from Sunday. There are 2 "oops" moments in it. I also added a custom graphic in the speedometer. Enjoy the video!

I watched your 3 videos and I am impressed! That was some great driving! I am also jealous about the size of the tracks. The track I normally run on is much smaller than the locations you were at. Then again, each location brings its own challenges. Thanks for sharing the videos! |

There are a lot of very competitive guys in my region so the best I've ever been in pax is 20/~140. |
