Mark, why are you in TTU? Dave and I were just givin you a bad time, did you have to reclass, or did you change the car? FWIW, both days the first session(blanked out) was my, and several others fastest. I did not know til later that it did not count. Time to read the rules I guess. I'll be at BW for the 9th, and then at T'hill on the 29-30th. Carl

Carl- going by the written rules I'm in TTA, albeit 1 point away from Unlimited. John's interpretation puts me in TTU which I'm fine with. He is classifying my engine as a Z06 motor and they go right into TTU he made very clear in our 45 minute conversation.
Somehow he emailed me with a direct quote with my mods off of this messageboard that sparked this whole controversy regarding what class I'm in. Wonder who sent it "buddy"?
Funny how my daily driver on the same tires I drive to work on is only a little bit behind a dedicated race car like yours on real slicks. Next year in TTU should be very interesting indeed.
See you on the track.

Mark, you need a reality check. If you are suggesting that I sent him, or Dave sent him a quote from this thread you are indeed completely lost. I do not see how anything stated in this thread, or any other thread would unfairly place you in a race class you do not belong in. My car would be in TTA if you go by the point system, but after talking to John I put my car in TTU. Your car, according to you, was classed by John, if that is the case, then why did he change his mind? You can run your car in Group 4 unclassed if you like, but to blame me for somehow setting you up is BS. Where in this thread does it say you have a ZO6 motor? I for one had no idea that you did, I thought you had a Camaro SS motor in your car.
If you are one point into TTU, it would be easy to get back into TTA. Just put the carpet back in the rear of your car, and you get two point back. Now you are in TTA.
You need to loose the "SEE YOU ON THE TRACK" BS. I drive my car for fun, I built it for a class where I am destined to get my *** kicked. The SU class winner turned a 1:46, I am nowhere near that, and never expected to be. Anyway, it was Dave that called ME out a NASA forum before my car was officially classed. I then posted the question of my proper class on that same forum, TTA was the answer. I have nothing to hide, you on the other hand stated publicly on this thread that cheating was O'k because Smokey Unick did it in the 60s LOL. So, if you want to talk, call me, if you are unfairly classed, challenge John's ruling. If you are one point away from TTA put 5lbs of carpet in the back of your car, and you'll be in TTA again. You said you would be in TTU next year anyway, what is the big deal??? I just do not get where you are coming from. Sorry to everyone that is interested in the racing part of this thread. Carl

The NASA TT rules are poorly written and open for much interpretation.... that was the point I was trying to make with what Smokey Yunick did back in the day. He pushed the rules to the limit. I don't condone cheating at all.
TTU is supposed to have 2 classes next year (TTU and TTZ). Full blown race cars and another one for ones are more street oriented but don't fit into TTA classing. Let's hope that happens.
I'm competitive Carl hence my comments in defending myself still being in TTA. As to the trunk carpeting... you are allowed to remove it under the TT rules weight reduction section (below #10). I have a Camaro motor... but with cam/heads. THe rules say take +4 for internal mods (ie heads/cam)... I did. I wasn't happy with John's decision and probably why I'm blowing up on you.
This was a bad place to bring any of this stuff up. Please excuse me.

NP, done. I agree the rules are loose, sometimes that is good, sometimes that is bad. Obviously, I don't stand a chance vs a Porsche Cup car, or a GT1 car. I doubt many cars of that level would participate, but they do come in to our group to practice, and since they already have transponders, they become 'spoilers' in the series. In my mind TT is a place for the serious group 4 folk to compete with less likelyhood of damage to their cars than "racing". Before TT, you would not generally see high level race cars in group 4. There will always be those that can throw big $$ at their cars, and will dominate these sorts of competitions, that is just life. My deal is to go out, have fun, and build the fastest 2nd gen I can. Talk to you later, Carl

First, congrats to Mark and Carl for their placings, both are very fast cars and I'm proud of ya!
Second, to answer the P-7 vs SM question, the Norcal Pro7 cars are running anywhere around high 2:13s to 2:17s, depending on driver. 2:13 on a really hot lap, 2:15 is more typical. SpecMiatas run anywhere from a 2:09 to 2:13, depending on driver and setup level. OTOH, the top drivers in Spec Miata cup are running with us too. All at Thunderhill. Those margins can change depending on the track.
Third, kinda late for a race report. I'll make mine short. Saturday, qualified 5th with a 2:13, finished 3rd. 2:13 has usually been ok for first or second in PS1, but the competition level is going up in PS1, and I can't slouch around anymore. Sunday, gear box problems in qualifying but still turned a mid 2:12 (fastest I've done is a 2:11.1), 3rd gear is pretty much shot in the car. Race, turn 2, had to check up and go off to avoid a spin, couldn't get back on track until all of the 2nd wave passed me. Ran down a few of the tail end charlies. Headed into turn 14, turned in my normal way, checked mirrors, didn't see anyone, some of the spec miatas in wave 3 had caught the back markers in our wave. #1 and 2 were closing fast, I checked my mirrors before I turned in, but didn't see the miata, who had dived inside of the guy behind me, and continued into my left front fender, door, and quarterpanel. I got back on track, car started wandering down the front straight so I called it a race and parked it.
I'd really like to finish a sunday race without a broken gearbox or a broken car.
really I would
Paul
