Nurburgring 2010

http://www.rx7.net.nz/rx7netindex.html

I have been working on an FD for 8 years in my spare time and it has finnaly got a use!
Nurburgring 24HR 2010.
I have been to the ring for the last 3 24hr races with Ric Shaw racing as part of the team.
Ric Shaw in Australia asked to borrow the car and he will put a 20B PP in it.
I shipped the car over (I'm in New Zealand) last week.
There are some pics of it on my web site.

We have entered Class SP5 so i have spent the last few months pulling out my 13B and changing things to suit the SP5 rules

My budget is pretty much blown and it's very hard to attract a sponsor at the moment so we will do it on a shoe string again :)

We are aiming for a podium in SP5 which i'm sure the car will be capable of.

I'll post stuff here as we get closer to the race and if people are interested.

I just want to see a 20B thrash around the ring!!!

Glen

Here is a picture of the Hollinger 6 speed sequential box.
I got it out of a Japanese GT300 car.
The adapter is interesting, it came with the box, I spoke to Hollinger and they didn't make it.
Hollinger just say they usually join two FD cases together. I like this adapter better.

BTW Hollinger are great to deal with. I needed a new gear indicator light and control box (gearbox came with multipole switch but the control box and light must have gone with the car) and a drive shaft yoke and I received them the next day. I got them before I'd even had time to pay for them!!!

Turns out i don't need the control box as the switch plugs straight into a motec dash.

Winters quick change

1 Attachment(s)
I was going to import this myself but freight was too much.
I got it from cardwell racing here in NZ.
Great to deal with. (daughter is a but grumpy) The owner is great.

Its an independant diff with an LSD centre.
I used lightened Empi 934 C.Vs with chromoly cages.
Custom Axles were made by Heat treatments in Auckland
I still have the stock outer C.Vs so when we crash it they will be easy to replace.

FD:) 08-29-09 06:07 PM

diff and box coolers

1 Attachment(s)
There are two tilton diff/box pumps and coolers with fans in the boot.
One for the diff and one for the box

FD:) 08-29-09 06:15 PM

chromoly ladder power frame

The gearbox and diff were fitted by Race FX. Chromoly mounts. The diff is fitted to the stock rear subframe and a chromoly ladder power frame connects the diff to the box.
Drive shaft has a yoke at each end so there is a supra? slider spline at the box end.
Custom Drive shaft was made by Driveshaft Specialists Nz Ltd.
Gave him the Hollinger chromoly yoke, a length and the Winters yoke and he had the shaft made ballanced and ready by the end of the week!!!
Excelent!

GASnGO fd 08-31-09 10:36 PM

very cool, fly the kiwi flag mate,go the 20b...

ghiaracer 09-01-09 03:24 AM

VERY HIGH QUALITY THERE!!!

What does that box run? its in the 30k range new if i remember.

Dan Unk 09-02-09 01:52 PM

I love this kind of privateer race effort, make sure you keep us up to date on the build progress. Videos, lots of them please!

CJarrett 09-03-09 11:00 PM

Definitely keep us updated, love these types of projects!

rob20rx7 09-04-09 07:46 AM

Looks awsome! Great Work!

The Hollinger is not that expensive.
I paid NZ$15K with the adapter and a couple of boxes of spare gears, dogs, input shafts, selectors.
That's about US$10K

A new one is about US$10K + adapter of some kind and bell housing and probably some other bits. I would budget NZ$22K

The new ones have an oil pump built in and i believe wider gears(?) and 8 dogs instead of 5(?)

There are a few "H" pattern Holingers around for sale because the local V8 class now allows sequential. They are a different box and i don't think you can change an H one to a sequential one.
I believe they go for between NZ$ 10 ~ 15K.

FD:) 09-09-09 03:28 AM

I'd like to get a sponsor for the race.
We have the car sorted, getting it there is sorted.
We could do with a top up of funds.
There are 300,000 spectators at the track and it is tevevised live across Europe.

What's the best way to get a sponsor?

Super6 09-09-09 10:23 AM

Nce man living the dream

Supernaut 09-09-09 10:32 AM

Cool FD. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread.

Ian@TunerUK 09-14-09 07:57 AM

That's a mad FD! I'll be keeping my eye on that :)

catch-22 09-15-09 04:54 PM

That front lip spoiler is NUTS!! Really sweet project!

CJarrett 09-16-09 06:42 PM

I'm looking at hopefully getting some sponsorship as well for my build. My plan is to put together a publicity brief, basically going over where my car will be seen, and by approximately how many people. Events, shows it will be displayed at etc.. its basically a sales brochure for your car, selling how much publicity you can get it.

diabolical1 09-28-09 02:39 PM

this sounds like a very fun project. the event sounds like even more fun than the build. the Ring is one of my all-time favorite tracks. i'd love to drive there before i die.

good luck with the project and the event.

Supersevenn 10-07-09 06:26 PM

We both have the same goal! I am gearing up for 2011 though. My first goal is a 6 hour race in Colombia for 2010. Open up a paypal account for donations, it helps. Goodluck and keep us posted !!

FD:) 02-11-10 05:50 PM

Well the dream came to a halt!
The car is back in NZ and i'm going to finish it here.

Tofuman FC3S 02-12-10 08:38 AM

What happend?

Riz.

FD:) 02-12-10 03:58 PM

Bit of a long story... The engine package didn't work out as planned and time ran out.
No FD at the ring this year...

Another car is being built for next year.

The good news is i have a 20B PP here in NZ so i will finish it here.
I just need to save up for the Motec.

FD:) 02-14-10 03:05 PM

6hs hollinger gearbox.

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/List...x?id=271197589

Heres a 6 speed holiger for sale in NZ.
Its an H pattern nnot sequential but still awesome.

If you are over seas i can collect it and ship it for you.

Tofuman FC3S 02-14-10 04:15 PM

OK, good luck finishing the car!

Riz.

FD:) 03-04-10 01:43 AM

Rs gt

If no one minds i will just blog what im doing, here.

The RS is back at my shop and i'm finishing it.

Purchased a used NZ short 3 rotor PP last week.
I won't mention who i brought it off because i don't publisise private names.
l do mention company names or names of people in industry as i think they are the property of the public domain. (well thats the way i look at it...) If i say something about YOU let me know and we can negotiate a suitable edit.

Saw it running in an FD, looked good, i now have it at my place. It's going in this weekend.
I have a tripple plate tilton and flywheel already so should go straight in.
I also got the subframe which is a stock FD one with a couple of bosses welded to it for the 3 rotor mounts.

It's not a "20B" it is made from 13b parts.
The parts are made / modified here in NZ by precision engineering, (very nice to talk to, a straight up guy)
I visited them again before purchasing the motor and all the parts are current and replaceable.
I will call it a 20S "S" for "short" lets see if it catches on :)

The engine was put together by Brian Grey in Tauranga. Met him, was busy but a good bloke. He has a 4 rotor FD GT car. Nice.

I am using a Link extreme computer because thats what was running it before and it was good . I also got the tune with the motor. Link is also made in NZ (waive the flag :) )
I don't know them but when i rang they were helpfull to very helpfull.
They do a few dash options via CAN.
I'd like to add a motec dash when i can afford it.

It's actually much better than i expected, but i havn't looked at their products for a long time.

I'm in the process of purchaseing some coil on plug with ignitors so i don't have leads and have simplier wireing.
More about this latter.

I also saw a great way to do a pedal box with out a pedal box!
The previous owner of the 20S did a great job.
The FD obviously has a pedal box... just add two master cylinders and a cable bias to the stock pedal!
I'm working on this now and i'll give you the brake caliper, rotor size and master cylinder specs latter and more importantly the pedal mods.
I'm only running Willwood gear. I like it as long as you stress releive the disks they last long enough.

I wasn't going to post a vid of the motor running because it wasn't mine at the time but now it is i guess there is no harm...

I'll put a link to it once i put it up.

I deloomed the car. What a weight in wire!!!!

I have an OBR power control module that is CAN based so that will run the car and the link will run the engine.

http://www.obr.uk.com/PCM.htm

So things are moveing along nicely

FD:) 04-05-10 05:41 PM

Been a bit busy putting a front mount in my R1.

I changed a few things on the engine.
Fitted the light flywheel and tripple plate tilton

Designed and CNCed a bracked to Mount the alternator low on the left side of the motor.
Have to get a new belt.

FD:) 04-05-10 05:44 PM

2 Attachment(s)
Alternator bracket

FD:) 04-05-10 05:59 PM

Changed the front cover from FC to FD.
In didn't fit the sump so i routed the bottom off and welded some alloy plate on.
I didn't want the ugly dizzy and now it has FD pickups off the crank.

FD:) 04-05-10 06:13 PM

2 Attachment(s)
bottom of front cover.

I used a hand router set a 3mm deep with a carbide alloy cutter.
Then cut out a pair of 3mm plates the same dims as the FC front cover and welded them on.
Had to drill and tap 4 of the sump bolt holes as their location is different FC --- FD

Turned out pretty good.

FD:) 04-05-10 06:23 PM

1 Attachment(s)
The ignitor/coil on plug arrived from Okada projects a week or so ago.
I'm mounting them this week, then the engine can go in.
No more leads, coils or igntor to mount!!

FD:) 04-05-10 06:24 PM

1 Attachment(s)
20S PP engine

FD:) 04-05-10 06:26 PM

Modified the oil filter and got a big remote filter.
The remote filter has a pressure regulator built in so i made it return to the old filter bipass/ regulator.
The Remote filter has seperate lines going directly to the from, middle and rear bearings.
I'm going to plumb in my accusump as well. That will go in to the remote filter.

Fitted a RB rear swaybar and a Tripoint front bar.
Took the quantum shocks out and put in soome Apexi N1

FD:) 04-05-10 06:36 PM

1 Attachment(s)
I looked at various pedal boxes and decided to just modify the stock brake pedal.

Design photo attached.

DIY brake pedal box.
You need,
2 x 3/4 inch willwood master cylinders
1 x willwood adjustable brake balance bar
Remote cable
4 bolts and 4 nyloc nuts.

3 laser cut plates
2 pieces of laser cut tube
(I can supply these.)

1 x 1mm cut off disk and an angle grinder.
1 x steel mig welder
1 x alloy tig welder

Cut excess parts of old pedal box
Weld on new bits
Cut the mastercylinder hole in the wirewall a bit bigger so the new master cyliner boots fit through.
Mount new bits in car weld firewall plate over the hole.
All done.

Interested? glen@rx7.net.nz

The brake master cylinders device is really interesting.

Glen

Good luck making it to the 24hr race next year, would you please keep a note of me as i'd be interested in a pay/drive on this.

I've got a few years rotary race experience under my belt and a few hundred Nurburgring laps.

As an added bonus, i'm a tuner as well which may help with inevitable last minute gremlins.

I run M800 on my race car.

I also have a few contacts in Nurburg should you need accommodation / workshop arrangements prior to the race.

Coil on plug

3 Attachment(s)
I have drawn up the coil on plug holder for the 20S.
Will CNC it this week and fit it on the weekend.

Here are some renders.
It is held onto the engine with 6 dzus clips.

FD:) 05-05-10 09:05 PM

I have finished the pedal box too. I will take some photos of it in the car.
Turned out pretty good.
Any one got pics of a LHD brake pedal?
I wounder if it's different to a RHD one??

FD:) 06-26-10 11:59 PM

Stock Pedal box with bias

2 Attachment(s)
I've put it back in the car.
Here are some photos. They are a bit hard to see... I'll take some better ones latter.
I changee to the smaller master cylinders to give more room.

I just have to weld that plate to the firewall. Then plumb it up.

MuRCieLaGo 06-27-10 12:11 AM

What a hugely nice project! :icon_tup:

Keep it up, I'm jealous! :(

Big FD Lower intake manifold

3 Attachment(s)
Here's another thing I just finished.
It's a casting for a bigger lower intake manifold for my 13B REW FD.

I added a couple of bosses for a heat shield. It has 4 injector bosses
This was a sample and i didn't need the two extra injector bosses so i cut them off and welded up the holes.
It takes a stock secondary injector rail and injectors with no modification. or you could run 4 injectors but youd need to make a fuel rail or i guess if enough people wanted them i could cast some stock looking 4 injector rails to match this manifold??

I tried it on a stock motor with twin turbos and it fits you just need to bend one of the hard oil feed lines a little bit.

I got this one HPCed. I like HPC but it is VERY expensive here in NZ. They charged me NZ$370 for coat it with the extreme black. Bit of a rip off I recon?

It would look pretty good polished…

FD:) 06-27-10 12:19 AM

And another thing is nearly completed.

2 Attachment(s)
I'm making a carbon radiator shroud for the 3 rotor FD.
I made the one off mould from polystyrene. Cover it with Sellotape, 2 layers of carbon over it, then peel ply, then vacuum bag it with a rubbish bag for a few hours, poor petrol in it to remove the polystyrene and bobs your uncle! A carbon part!

I've just finished the mould, will carbon it up next.

FD:) 06-27-10 12:36 PM

Big FD Lower intake manifold

I forgot to mention that it is a direct replacement for the factory item.
i.e. the top manifold is in the stock location so you don't have to change any intercooler piping.

Hi Glen,

What is the cost of your manifolds, are the runners equal lenght, ie eliminate the perceived lean out problems associated with the rear rotor housing with the factory LIM.
I to have built the pedal box about two years ago, the japanese were way ahead of us, I found info & design 3-4yrs ago on a jap website. saves alot of money doing the conversion, & work great.

Cheers.

They are as close to equal length as i could get them. I use a Power FC so I tune with two widebands and even the mix between the rotors.
