SC New FB IT7 owner in SC

Hello all. My racing buddy and I have just bought a '79 12A FB IT7 car. Some of the guys in the SE may recognize it. It was apparently built in 1991 and has lasted this long (I guess it's too slow to really get itself or the driver into trouble). We were looking for the smallest investment needed to get into racing and IT7 is where we landed.

The first 2 are pics from the seller

This is the car as it sits in my friends garage next to my 328is family car project

Here's me climbing in for fun.

The car is clearly class legal and race ready and we are going to spend as much time/money as we have getting it on track, but it would also be fun to improve it as much as possible.

Where are some common areas that weight can be lost from these FB 12A cars?
I'll keep searching, but if anyone has a link to their IT7 build thread I would love to read your thread.

We are looking forward to getting into wheel to wheel racing. Point me toward any resources that you think could be helpful.

We have a drivers school in February and would like the car to last the weekend, which can be a lot of driving (like 20 hours over 3 days). What can we do to make sure our little 12a will survive?

I know it's a 79 with a 12A and a new front air dam.

I recommend changing all the fluids such as engine oil, tranny, and differential. Also if you start having "hard starts" then pulling the plugs and adding ATF (not the whole bottle) to the combustion chambers it will eat up the carbon build up. Carbon can severely damage the apex and corner seals and can cause loss of compression. Let it sit for a day or two with the occasionl turning of the motor manually to help the atf get into all the chambers. Spin the motor with out the plugs in the roto housing to get some of the atf out. Be ready for the smoke show once you reinstall the plugs and crank it up. It will burn off do not worry. Rebuilt my 12A about 6 years ago with stock port and she still purrs because of the procedures mention above that i perform on her in the off season.
