I was at my first drivers school as a spectator and got a few rides around VIR. Im hooked to say to least. I was working on an FC to be driven on the street now the car will be made into the event toy. I want to keep it mostly stock and build as I go and learn. there are some things I want to install to start with.
roll bar. I was looking at autopower but I need a passenger seat for an instructor it also has to have a crossbar for harnesses.
I guess its only one thing I am having a problem sorting. the car really wont see street duty except driving over to the local autocross. maybe the hour drive to the track but thats a little risky.
hope to get this car sorted soon and maybe see some of you guys out there.

I have the autopower with the diagonal brace that goes from the driver's side head area to the passenger side floor, and a harness bar. The harness bar goes all the way across so both sides can use it. The passenger side seat cannot slide as far back as the driver's because of the diagonal bar, but unless the passenger is overly tall it isn't a problem.

Be aware that if you have the power seatbelts, getting the rear brace bars past the humps that contain the mechanism is a total bitch. I had to take the coverings off the mechanisms, slide the bar in place, and then stick the covers back in place under the bar, then bolt the bar in place. If work on the power belts is ever required, I will probably just crank them into driving position and the pull the fuses rather than mess with them.

 

Click on to kirkracing.com for the very best bolt in roll bars. I've used them for years with no problems. They'll make them any way you want. Hope this helps.

 

Speed Raycer: I think its a bit to far to take my car from NC to have a roll bar welded in unless you were doing it for free . there is a shop here local called competition cages but the price and a permanent bar are a little to much for me at the moment.

Dick Elliott: I got a price form kirk racing and I looks like thats what I will get. they are closer than autopower so shipping wont be as bad either.

Gene: I have the power belts but I have removed the motors and all hardware so I guess I had them. no worries about ever needing to make repairs. I did leave the tracks and seals as to no have gaps in the head liner.

Circle Racing Wheels is the place to go. 12 lbs for a 13x7 so a 15x8 can't be too heavy.

I have a used 6 point Autopower roll cage but it is out in CA. It has the braces for harnesses on both sides. It has 2 side bars on drivers dise that can be removed and 1 bar on passenger side that can also be removed.

 

A local option for you would be to talk to Chris Schimmel in Hillsborough, NC. He's an SCCA racer (ITB), and builds custom cages. He does top-notch work at very reasonable prices. He did my Spec Miata cage, as well as cages for a good number of the folks in the Tarheel Sports Car Club who do Solo I, SCCA, and NASA racing. http://www.competitioncages.com/

 

I've seen Chris's work and it is the best I've seen in a very long time. Welds are outstanding, along with design of the cage. You couldn't ask for better workmanship. Best cages are built by racers. Go for it. DICK

 

I ditched a bolt-in Kirk a few weeks ago.

Save your money and let him do the job right the first time.

You don't really need the bar for your first couple of events, but you should be making plans to get one ASAP if you find that you are going to continue to do events. Oh yeah. If you are scrimping by in terms of money now, you might want to think twice, because it only gets worse (Brakes, tires, event fees...you want to do more than 2 events a year and costs start to get out of hand <grin>....)

It's good clean fun and worth it, but be prepared to shell out some $$$.
