Engine, tranny, and diff oil changed... everything else inspected. I'm loading up for NASA Midwest/Great Lakes end of season event this weekend. I saw another RX-7 on the roster, signed up for TTS I believe. I'm sure I'll have some video's up next week.

Well, after my second session, my oil feed line started leaking and hitting the turbo manifold causing a little smoke to come out from behind my car. After the session I let everything cool off and started to take everything apart. In order to get to this line, I have to remove the CHRA from the hot side of the turbo. It's just a V band clamp, no big deal, right? Well, I've taken the turbo apart on a few different occasions and it's never given me any difficulty. It didn't want to come so I gave it some more time to cool off and sprayed some thread lubricant on it and tried to work the nut back and forth a little. Long story short, I broke the V Band clamp. Luckily, my little brother(who lives outside of Indy) and is a Mechanical Engineer should be able to find another one on a Saturday afternoon. He and my dad drove into Indy while I fixed the oil feed line. They couldn't find a v band clamp that was narrow enough. They did find one that might work, and after some cutting with a die grinder... still no luck as it was too wide to fit. Looking back now, I compare my brainstorming and trying to figure something that will work to a drug addict trying to find a vein and not having any luck... haha. Aaaaannnnnnyway, had to call it an early weekend and headed home after only two sessions... all because of a $20 part. This is the second time Putnam has done this too my oil feed line, but I'll be ready for her next time :D. I guess that's how it goes sometimes and it's better that it's something small rather than something major that would take me off the track for a couple of weeks.
I did meet Dan this weekend with the turbo FC. Really REALLY nice car!!! Hope to see you at the track again soon! Now to get on the phone and find this 94mm V Band Clamp... |

haha... that's good stuff Adam! Well, after calling prob. 15-20 turbo stores, rotary shops, rotary turbo shops, trying to get ahold of greddy, trying to get the part through a Greddy authorized retailer... I was starting to go into what I like to call "full panic mode". I called Clampco and gave them the specs and they said they could make one for me... for $650... yikes!! I eventually ended up finding one at a diesel shop in Nashville. They were able to cross reference the part number and get one for me in 2 days! It arrived yesterday. I got home from work around 7pm and pulled my battery powered light out of my truck and got into the trailer and put the car back together. I changed the driver's side front brake pads from PFC 01's(which have been great pads) to the DTC-60's(which are suppose to be the cat's meow). I'm going to change the passenger side tonight when I get home and bleed the brakes, load everything up, and get ready to roll as soon as I get off work tomorrow :D Weather forcast isn't looking too good for VIR, but either way... VIR is VIR. Fritz's will be there and I also saw in another thread that Catch-22 will be there as well.

I predict another set of PFC01's will be replacing the DTC-60's in short order. The 60's will stop the car like right now but the 01's are a little smoother and easier to modulate in my experience. Hope you have better luck at VIR.. :-)

Here's a video from this weekend, not the best one, but I'll have some better ones up in a day or two hopefully. I'm still playing with this new video editing program I just got. It seems like I either make them really poor quality or really really good quality... like a normally 1.5gb HD video is now 16gb's... doh!

I was afraid the weather was going to be bad on Saturday, but it held out enough to keep the line dry. There were a TON of people there. NASA Mid Atlantic does that shit up right! I got a ton of great track time, Fritz won TTS with a new fastest lap of 2:07, and we got to hang out with friends and family... can't beat it. My girlfriend, who almost always comes to the track with me got to ride around the track at speed for the first time this weekend. She went out with a friend of mine in his spec3 car. She came back in grinning with that crazy look in her eyes like we all get, sat down and looked at me, and said, "I want to do that again, like right now!" hahaha... welcome to my addiction. Hey n2ofun, what is your experience with the DTC-60's and the 01's? Have you spent a good bit of time on the track with them in your FD? Curious as to where you are getting your information from. After this weekend, I think the 01's are a more aggressive pad than the DTC-60's... more aggressive bite, more stopping power, etc. The DTC-60 doesn't seem as aggressive to me. Basically, the opposite of what you are saying above, which makes me curious. I'm wondering if these will get a better with some more miles on them? They are def. bedded in and are a really nice pad, but I just don't like them as well as the PFC 01's. Maybe I'll change my mind after Road Atlanta. |

Yep running on new HOOSIERS :) Mark Underwood is going to try to sink the traqmate data w/ the video and email it to me but apparently it's a complicated process and takes a while. ONce again I'll post the data in my thread when my head isn't pounding but I can't make much out of it :) Anyway enough BS about me lets see a vid of the 2.17 lap :icon_tup: Very good time for not knowing VIR that well and only doing HPDEs for a little over year. Brent, That Porsche driver probably pitted immediately and ran to the bathroom to change :p |

Fritz, hope you get to feeling better man. I def. know the flu sucks. I sleep or sat on the couch for like 4 days straight when I had it. I'm working on finding a new video editing program right now so hopefully I can get the full capabilities out of my camera. I think you have a Sony Camera right? The program I currently have is Sony Vegas HD and would prob. work great for you. I am pretty sure I can authorize it on another computer, if you are interested, I can send you a copy and save you some $$$.
Peter, no kidding on the 01's! Look forward to meeting you and would love to get a ride in your car. Are you running 99 twins sequentially? I really believe if I would of still had the 01's on the car, I could of slowed down enough before having to swirve. Still 100% my fault and I shouldn't of ran up on him that quickly, but lesson learned... and not the hard way this time :) It was text book though. We had been talking in class that day about a list of 6 things to improve on. One of those were compressing braking zones so I had been playing around with it going into turn 1. The other one I chose to work on(and I always have to work on) is keeping my eyes up and looking ahead/being situationally aware... which I was also doing luckily. I saw him coming up fast and thought about taking an early apex and passing him, but I ultimately didn't want to risk putting myself into another possible bad situation so I took what I felt was the safest way out. |
The only reason NOT to use PFC 01's IMHO is if you don't like the price (which is perfectly understandable). Otherwise, they're it.
Brent, I do run '99s sequentially. I've also almost had happen to me what happened to you... if for no other reason than with high-dollar marques like Porsches or Vipers, I find that you have to practically glue yourself to their back bumper sometimes for them to eventually become convinced that you're actually faster. You hang back at a safe distance, and you'll be back there all day! Nice bail though. |
Oh yeah, once the DTC-60's run out, the PFC 01's are going right back on. I just kept hearing how great the DTC-60's are, which they are... but not as good as the PFC 01's. Who knows though, maybe they'll get better with some more time.
I def. want a ride in your car then. I am interested to see how your car does at VIR. I hear it's a beast out there. I def. know what you mean about gluing yourself to the back bumper. In the first video I posted from this weekend, around the 4:30 mark, I'm right behind the Panoz, who is waiting on a Viper. The Panoz goes by, the Oak Tree corner worker gives the Viper the blue and yellow flag, and what does he do... he takes off and leaves me. I seem to always make hand motions when this happens in the video as I'm laughing. I should prob. stop doing that. What's even better is I immediately outbrake him and am right back on him at the end of the straight... we then get the red flag and me and the Panoz pull over and the Viper and GTR think we are just stopping in the middle of the track for our health... and take off... haha. I'm sure I've missed plenty of flags though. Fun times... fun times. My dad, who is a diehard V8 guy, always makes the joke that he'd wreck his Corvette before he let a rotary pass him. |

All my experience with those pads are in an E30. Compounds dont change between cars that I know of.
The -60's always seemed to have good initial bite and would haul my car down quickly on the first hit of the brakes but faded with temp. Never faded till they failed to stop me but lost a little stopping power. The 01's have great bite as well but seem to be smoother initially and don't fall off as much with temp. The -60's always seemed harder to be smooth with. The 01's are very linear. I may not be describing it very good but you seem to have figured out what I was attempting to convey. I see we have a general consensus as well, PFC01's are it! Glad to hear you had some fun. First track day in my FD with suspension mods is next weekend at ECR. Wish me luck. |
