My Tenative 2009 Track Day Schedule
Here is a tentative schedule of the track days I'm thinking about doing. It all depends on my schedule, but I'm going to try to do as many as possible this year. If you know of anymore in the SE region post them up. Also post up if you are planning on attending any of these events. I'm sure there will be some HPDE and PDX's that are scheduled before too long. I'd love to see some more 7's out there. Chin Motorsports events are a little more expensive, but it's a quality event with lots of seat time and good instruction. I'll be updating this as I find new track days and as I confirm my attendance at the events.

Hey, i don't know if your schedule is set in stone, so if it isn't you might want to take a look at an HPDE at Bluegrass Motorsports Park. Its nearing completion this April and looks to be a nice track. Its 30 min south of Cincinnati in the Northern Ky area.

Since you have VIR on there, you may want to also consider MazdaDrivers who are running VIR Grand East on June 13-14 and will probably run a second event in the Fall.

Yeah, grand course is awesome, and Mazda Drivers are the only people who run it from what I was told (at least for track days that we can sign up for). I'll definitely be there for that one. |

I've done a track day with Chin Motorsports and I can most definitely say it is a great event with tons of seat time. Just make sure you register as soon as registration is open, all the spots fill up rather quickly.

Ah, wish VIR wasn't quite so far. With no tow vehicle and a 4-5 hr drive home, it's a bit of a worry. I'll try to make one of those dates though. NASA's got a VIR event on the 20-22nd of this month already which I was sort of thinking about if the weather looks good.

I'm in the same boat - 4.5 hour drive each way. It's always in the back of my mind, if something were to happen. AAA plus will cover 100 miles of the 250 back home for me, leaving around a $600 tow bill.
Mazda Drivers provides good track time (4x approx 30-min sessions per day). Chin is of course better at 3+ hours per day, but at a significantly higher cost (you can pass anywhere, which is nice). I never liked running with NASA - you only get 3x 20-min sessions, and that's if they're on time with the schedule. Last time they had to combine two groups for the last session to make up for time lost to a racing incident. |
Agreed about NASA. Less seat time, fallout from accidents during races, combined run groups sometimes. But they are usually lower cost than other club events, and it's nice to be able to spectate real racing in the downtime between sessions. Plus as a member you get 20% off brake pads which adds up fast, free GRM, etc. and their instruction and classroom sessions are by far the best I've seen. I'm thinking for later in this season trying out some TT events with them as well.

AAA now has a Plus tow package you can get one tow of 200 miles per year with your membership. So all you'd have to do is borrow a friends trailer at the event and get it 50 miles on your way and then call AAA ;) Free tow home.
I'll be at all of the TrackDaze events ;) and registration has already opened for the first half of the season. The NJ weekend date will probably go pretty quickly. You can also sign up for just one day for all of the events if you are on a tight budget. They also have season passes available, buy 3 events and you'll get roughly $120, buy 5 events and its almost $300 off. Im an instructor with Chin as well as NASA and can vouch that you get tons of seat time for the money. Normally Chin gives about 4 hour long sessions per day which actually wares down most novices pretty bad. NASA FL or NASA southeast regions both have great schedules, and put together great HPDEs.

I know I struggled to find track dates for the longest time. I think there is a large selection of tracks, companies, and dates to choose from below that should help some people… if nothing else other than the convenience of having the information consolidated here. Anyone know of hotels in the vicinity of Bluegrass? I've found a Ramada Inn so far. Just want to see what else is out there. I also must say, you can save alot of $$$ using the choice hotels discount you receive for being an SCCA member :D I've booked my hotel for Barber and Road Atlanta for end of May/start of June.

Bluegrass doesn't have alot of businesses around it to support alot of tourists, there is one Gas Station off of the I-71 Exit and there isn't another business for about 7-10 miles into Warsaw. Hey Memphisrains82, I plan to attend the June 6-7, and June 19th events, so give me a PM when it gets closer. |

For all of you Southeast guys, the Music City Mustang Club Track Weekend is less than 2 weeks away(May 22-23) at Nashville Super Speedway and I believe there are still some spots available. http://www.musiccitymustangclub.org/
Cost is only $135 a day, which is about is cheap as they come. Hope to see some of you guys there. |

haha... yep, my $7500 car of doom is in for 3 days of abuse this weekend. I just got to Barber earlier today and will be doing the NASA event with them Saturday and Sunday, and then I'm shooting across to Road Atlanta to do Chin Events on Monday. The Army is promoting me to promoting me to Captain on Monday so I thought I'd squander a little extra money at the track this weekend. :D

Bottom line up front... a bad day at the track is still better than a good day in Afghanistan :D Well guys, not a great day at the track. I kissed the wall and here is the end result: http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/b...9/Track033.jpg Good news though is that no one was hurt and it didn't damage my RZ wheel. The only thing that was hurt was my pride. I have a video of it that I will post later on once I figure out how to cut it down to under 10 minutes. I was on the last turn tracking out maintaining throttle and it broke loose. I went back and forth a few times before I did a 180 and hit the wall. I pitted to have the tech guy check out the damage and was given the green light to go back out and finish the session, which I did :D I was extremely relieved that the damage was as minimal as it is. However, after the next session I pull back in to my spot, put my drain pan under the car(as a precautionary measure) and start talking. I notice a coolant smell a few minutes later and pull the pan out.... sure enough it's leaked around 20-30oz of coolant. I take the intake and intercooler off and notice some black material on my radiator fans. I trace the problem to the hose that connects from the bottom of the AST to the bottom of the radiator has come loose(I'm assuming the radiator was jarred when I hit the wall) and hit the fan until the fan eventually wore a hole in the hose. Phil is pretty sure he has a spare and I'm going to go pick it up in a couple of hours. If he doesn't, I'll just splice a metal hose in the line. I'm hoping to avoid that as it would introduce 2 more potential failure points, but would work for the time being. Chris was running well today and I believe came in 8th overall in TT and 3rd in TTA. Wow, you get to a lot of tracks. I've always wanted to run Road Atlanta and Barber but I just can't bring myself to sit in a POS FD any longer than the 4.5 hours to VIR, not to mention the possibility of needing a tow home. I need to get a tow vehicle.

WOW, great pics!! Barber looks like one hell of a fun place to drive. I'm suprises on what little damage was done to your Rx-7 with the speed you carried into the wall. I look forward to running with you at Bluegrass if it ever gets opened.

Thanks Dan. Barber was a blast. It is such a nice clean track/compound. I really need to check out the museum one of these days. I was very relieved that the damage was minimal and all cosmetic. It could of ended my weekend very early!
Hoping to run Bluegrass as well!! I was suppose to run the NASA event there last weekend and it was canceled. I also just got word that the 10/10th's event for June 19 was canceled as well. Really hope it gets finished at some point this summer/fall. You heard any updates lately other than the website? |

If any of you southeast guys are considering doing the Nashville event on June 20 but on by Autosports, I would go ahead and sign up. They are hurting on participants currently and they might have to cancel if they don't get enough. Would really like to see this happen since there aren't really that many track days at the Nashville Super Speedway. |

At VIR having a blast. Looks like the weather is coming in though so it might be a wet afternoon. Lots of 7's in the mix. Man it feels great to finally be back in the silver car.
