Cool More Progress! Cage is done!!!

A few weeks ago, I got excited when I dropped my ITS car off for a new roll cage. Well, the excitement doubled when I got the car back home. I am actually enjoying stripping the interior of all the remaining insulation adhesive! I must be ill !!!

Check it out:

Jeez Chris! You got one or two tubes in there? Well, at least you won't have to worry about being underweight!

Looks great!

I feel like I need to get a 6 point for my computer chair so that I don't bump my head off of that.
Nice

Looks nice. Very substantial. I'm curious how much the cage weighs. Any idea how many feet of tubing you used? Also what size and type of tubing is it?

The tubing is 1.75" x .095" wall DOM tubing. I sent the fabricator 90 ft. of tubing, but with drops he probably used between 75-80 feet. If you figure that the tubing weighs in at 1.75 lbs/ft, the cage should weigh around 150 lbs. counting the mounting plates.

I weigh about 200 lbs. so I figure I should come in about right on weight. A friend of mine with a lesser cage had to add 70 lbs. of ballast and he weighs about 230 lbs. I don't think I will be too bad off.

Besides, a man with a wife and two kids has more important things to think about than just weight!

Wow, I'm actually surprised it weighs so little. I guess it's the .095 wall that saves you. I thought SCCA required a thicker wall, like .120 or more?
I'm sort of confused by the purpose of some of the tubes. Like the one that runs front to back right under the sunroof. Both of them go to the middle of another tube, and are unsupported. Is there a rule that requires that bar to be there if you have a sunroof?
I'm sure the cage will do it's job, it looks very well done. But let hope it never has to.

No, the IT rules for the FC specify .095" wall minimum.

There is no rule, however, since the car has a sunroof that will be bolted down w/ steel brackets, I wanted to have something to help prevent intrusion through the sunroof. Since the bar is in plane with the halo, there really isn't a need to triangulate it.

I'm sure the cage will do it's job, it looks very well done. But let hope it never has to.
Amen! to that.

IT rules for our cars: 1.5 x .120 or 1.75x.095. I'm running 1.75x.120, it's what we had on hand..

7s,

You had a link to your website posted somewhere before, but I forget. Would you mind posting the link?

Chris' cage is well beyond the minimum required tubing, but it seems to me that he's triagulated all of the tubes for strength and rigidity, which is a good thing. You don't have to build your cage this complex, but it certainly doesn't hurt (other than weight, and our cars tend to be too light after you strip all the non race stuff off them anyway.)
