How do you race prep your distributor?

How do you race prep your distributor, Any special tricks to locking out the advance? anything special that can be done please share?. Have you ever had a problem with vertical play in the dist shaft?

Nothing special. Just remove the springs and lock the weights at full advance. Either with a tack weld or I actually used hi temp loctite and its held up nicely. How much vertical play? In the top of the shaft theres a phillips screw, check it for security.

.055 vertical play, is that enough to reall wack out the timing???

The whole shaft in the housing? Or just the upper part to the lower shaft? Im sorry I shoulda been clearer with my question.
