Helmet choice
Helmet choice
I'm returning to the track after a long break, almost 35 yrs! I'll be racing in ITA, closed cockpit. I raced formula V's way back when and all we had then was open face helmets. Had a bike for awhile with a full face helmet and frankly, I'd prefer to use an open face helmet for the track if not in an open cockpit or a bike. What issues am I missing, if any. I see that the pre-drilled Hans fittings come w/ either type of helmet depending on which one you get. Thanks for any comments.
I'm good on the GCR and I prefer the fit of the open face. Both have Hans attachment points. No Hans now, but maybe in the future. Any inherent advantage in a full face for use with a Hans vs open, or not a factor.
If you don't plan to crash, there is no advantage.
I like full faces just in case there is an incident where something can come through a window or something inside the car can come in contact with my face.

I see your point. After a FV and a street motorcycle, the inside of a role cage seems pretty substantial and although I'm not the most handsome guy out there, I just may want to have the face covered. Thanks.
Give the good folks at Simpson Racing (www.TeamSimpson.com) a call about the various helmets they have. I like full faced whether in an open car or ohter wise. Simpson's full face, SA2005 "V-Sport" helmet is only $250.

you should look into these http://stilo-usa.com/helmets it's amazing what you get for the money. the options are endless, I've seen them in person and they are top quality and you can pick and choose how you want them built. I've got 4 more years on my Bell Dominator but this will be my next helmet.

i am sure most people know this but make sure whatever you get it is indeed for cars not motorcycles because the bike helmets are designed to with stand one collision while the car ones are made to sustain several hits and i have always worn full face whether on a bike or racing car
Here is what I race in. It has a great price and is very comfortable. Also has pre drilled hans anchors which is awesome. Also shields can easily be switchd out between tinted and clear depending on the weather that day.

The one that fits you best with a SA2010 rating. Helmets are one of those things you have to try on and see what fits your head. I have currently have a Bell that fits great. The helmet before was a Shoei, At the time the Bells didn't fit right. I have always gone full face. I usually go in and try on the helmets and buy them on site. Most helmets at this point are pre drilled for H&N restraints
Full face helmet because you will not believe how much crap will come through the side window and hit you in the face. I use a forced air Bell M2 connected to a helmet blower so that I can run the face shield down for that very reason.
Oh and for the best reason of all....they are safer
