GSL-SE pumpkin won't fit in 85 GSL hsg.

I tried the 1st gen section, didn't get much response. This is for an IT7 car.

I'm trying to put a GSL-SE rear pumpkin with a 4.88 R&P into an 85 GSL axle housing. There seems to be some interference - I can't get the pumpkin fully seated in the housing.

Comparing the 4.88 to the 3.909 that came out of the housing, the 4.88 ring gear is thicker by maybe 1/2 inch than the 3.909.

Any idea what I have and what housing it will fit into?

Thanks.

It should fit fine, though tightly. You might need to heat the axle housing with a torch and/or put the pumpkin in the 'frige to get them to slide together more easily. A BFH might also be advised.

BTW, the 4.88 is a great gear for a 1st gen NA!

I had this problem a while back trying to get my 3rd member back in. Put some grease on the spots that you think might cause it not to fully go together and see what is touching where.
I found that mine would not go in because of the two little post on the diff bearing retainer. These posts were hitting the ring in the back of the housing causing the pumpkin not to go in all the way. I filled these down a little at a time until it fit perfectly and know it works fine.

Thanks for the help Nick. It was exactly like you said. I can't wait to try out these new gears!

I put 4.8 gears in my 2nd gen Non-turbo. Trust me you'll like em! Kinda makes me wish I had the big bucks and put in a 5.12 though!
