Here is a video of a 928 using "technique" to avoid a sound hit. Although I understand they (they meaning the county sound police) will move around the track on occasion.

That is exactly what happened to the old Bridgehampton race track in NY. Loved that track! Hope Laguna doesn't fall to the same fate.

They can take from wherever they want. They tend to stay in the nice, building. It is warm and out of the elements. It is also the section of track closest to the houses and they are guaranteed everyone is at wide open throttle past them (unless they are worried about sound)

Yes, the sound booth at Laguna Seca seems to hate rotary motors. Also, if you have a turbo and an open intake your turbo noise alone can sometimes set off the sound meter.

When my FD was stock except for a downpipe and RB Dual Tip catback I used to sometimes get hit with a 94 reading - but it would depend on the day. Due to atmospheric conditions some days are much worse for sound readings that others.

I later had a custom made Borla muffler with a single tip that goes to the left and then slightly UNDER the car. That worked.

However I now have no cat and single turbo... so I don't think I have a prayer anymore.
