Well there is the first problem= disco potato! hehe

You think 2 years of racing and rings is a short life? Seriously??? I would change the rings at least once each season just to make sure it is all good! Has he done the cooling reroute mod? The stock cooling on the Miata's is not the best. The thermostat housing need to be relocated!

jrx13, yes they do make pretty nice parts. I am actually looking at getting the Smartwire system as well. I have a contact to get new parts at about 15% under retail. Not bad when you are dealing with something that is $2g!

Smartwire would be really really nice. What about engine management? Make it all integrated! Cameras too and fire system, all of it! (Yes I'm living vicariously through you!)

I have a MegaSquirt MS3+MS3x. They have a module for the megasquirt as well which bring most of the data needed in. The only external sensors I have got for the racepak are the oil temp (engine, trans, diff) and oil pressure!

Finally with the long weekend here I had some time to put the turbo manifold together. Definitely fun work!

Had a small turbo (GT35) sitting around and figured I put it on there until the EFR shows up. One bolt should hold it for now!

looks great!

What is your plan for heat shielding on that exhaust?

abeomid 10-08-12 12:51 PM

Thanks! Well the header will be coated inside and out. Possibly a shield for the turbine housing. Aside from that, not much. I mean all the brake and clutch parts are in the cabin, so the heat shield is really to keep under hood temps down!

chicagozer 10-08-12 12:58 PM

I had no idea the Miata motors would make that much power. Wow.

craaaazzy 10-08-12 08:41 PM

Very nice build! I wish I had the time, money, and skills to do this myself. If only i won the lotery. Subscribing...

Thanks! Yes they can make good amount of power with enough boost!

I have the side pipe figured out! Will make the mounts this week!

My comment regarding heat shielding was pertaining to the fact that it was in your passenger compartment.

Not only will it be loud, it will be hot too!

dream36realms 10-09-12 07:53 AM

very nice build going on here. If I had the money and time, I would totally be doing a similar project. although mine is based on the LSx motors. I just like the idea of gutting the car to its bare minimum then doing the cage work followed by ALL fiberglass body to include the floor. might leave the roof metal with a sunroof though since after it is done it will be a daily driver ;)

Well there will be a box built around the exhaust with gold shielding. One thing you have to remember is that this is not a rotary, so it will be a couple of hundred degrees cooler to start with. On top of that the turbo will cool down the exhaust further. We have done similar setup on a few rotaries with no issues. So I am confident it will be fine. Same goes with the noise. There are quite a few miata's that run on track with turbo and no muffler. Two main reasons I went with the BP engine over rotary. Less noise and less heat. With a rotary, you have to have muffler coming out of your ying yang to meet sound requirements. Tired of dealing with black flags!

Thank you! Unfortunately money and time are not the only thing that feed this project!
The roof is steel. That's one part of the car that needs to be original even for racing. I wouldn't want to have a car like this as a daily driver. It will not be the best thing on the street! Getting old for that!

getgone 10-11-12 09:33 PM

I love to see these projects, but--like BigAl's build--when do you guys get to the point of racing it. I've 'built' my own as well only I've only really torn shit off to strip it down, not custom build the components/chassis.I get alot more track days that way. Haha. Have fun with this.

Well I have other cars to race. This one will just win races! haha

Well the exhaust is all done and welded. Only piece required will be an elbow from the turbo to the flex when the turbo shows up!

There is more room than it appears. As well the pipe will move down and back once some more trimming is done and the new sheet metal is added. But yes it is close to the crank angle sensor!

Well the rear suspension is finally done. The brackets arrived and are welded now. I partially mounted the exhaust too and it has the proper clearance I was planning on!

Thank you! I have more:

The coolers' location and mounting has been redesigned for a better venting out of the hood and under the car. It is a v-mount system now. The exhaust is fully mounted now too (excuse the crappy photo) and I have made a mount for the windshield defroster.

Im speechless....... This must be my lucky month, Ive been curious about miata engines in rx7s for a long time now, and this is the second one Ive found within the week. Its not an FC, but at least it falls within my requirements of needing to be a true racecar.

So cool. I understand everything your doing and why. so happy to follow this build, congrats!

abeomid 10-24-12 02:30 PM

Thank you! It has a FC subframe if that matter, hehe!
