UPDATE on the suspension setup, we ran a practice and championship autocross this weekend in San Diego with the 400#/250# setup with AWR E-Prod housings and revalved Bilsteins.
Car was okay, saturday's course was terribly designed and involved a lot of very low-speed balky stops and a few 1st gear sections, with zero course flow (we have a huge lot in San Diego, probably one of the largest in the country-- no excuse for needing 1st gear multiple times!!) Couldn't get a baseline against the Civics in STS, but I had started running 112 second laps (course sucked, zero flow), then immediately ran consistent 107's back to back to back, then came in and raised the suspension as I believe I was getting some bump-steer from the control arm angle being overexerted. Right off the bat consistent 104's for the rest of the day. Balance was tough to pin down as the course was unusually terrible, glad we'll never see anything so cobbled together on the National Tour. Did I mention the course sucked?
Sunday had a nice, smooth flowing course in the mid-80 sec range. STS2 was the first run group, with 5 drivers in class, including former national champions Bill Sanford and Steve Coe. I was 1.2 back from both of them, got a rerun due to some coolant on course (really slick!), finished 4th of 5 from last-minute heroics from a well set up E-Stock miata on 15" Azenis. I've always said that I'd rather drive a well-prepared Stock class car in a more modified class than a poorly-arranged modified car, as consistency was the problem. Observers saw a lot of rear wheel lift, and as true with saturday the Hawk HP+'s offer waaay too much initial brake lockup with that much spring rate....we'll be going down to the HPS or another Hawk compound in the front, those big calipers and pads are way overkill for a street tire shod car.
Car still hasn't been on the dyno yet, and the 6-ports are definitely sticking, causing drivability problems. Motor only has 600 miles on it now, need to get more time in to see what is going on. Need to lighten the car up as well, as the Miata's 600lb advantage isn't helping me any, especially with a motor that is down on power and meanwhile chasing suspension setup when the first Tour and ProSolo are in March!
