Evo 8 @ AutoX

I saw an Evo 8 at the autocross today and must say I am very impressed it gripped to the road much better than the FD's that were there but I think the FD's out accelerated it but not by much. 240z's were rippin' it up, one had the best time of the day compared to all the new cars and everything. Ferraris E type Jag Super 7 and 3 FD e36 M3 M Roadster Civics Supra TT 240sx 240zs were all there. and only 1 porsche, a boxster at that. It was in NorCal and @ the Sonoma County Airport. Awesome day today.

Who are you?

Yep, the EVO impressed. The Ferrari 360 did not...The Boxster sustained a nice 4-wheel drift all around the back sweeper before tanking it in the esses.

I was driving the red FD. My first autocross on a stock 69k mile suspension. Definitely lacking some grip compared to all the cars with Hoosiers and Falken Azenis. Not to mention definitely lacking some driving skill...

Hi guys, Thanks for coming out. The EVO was driven by a nationally competitive driver. In autocross it is 70% driver, and 30% car. Here are some top official times from today;
31.510 240Z (2650lbs/300+hp/V700s)
31.517 Rotus 7(1600lbs/400hp/Avon slicks)
32.377 EVO8 (stock/national driver/street tires)
32.694 SupraTT(3780lbs/390hp/v700s) ME
33.116 FD(mods unknown/street tires) awesome job Alex
I believe Alex is a first time driver, The FD shines at these events. Yes the EVO is fast, but according to the owner it has WAAAY too much understeer at the limit.
Thanks to all that came, ran, and worked. please do not post directions to the site on the net. Further, please obey all traffic laws approaching and leaving the site(you know who you are).

That's the other beauty of all wheel drive I know the WRX guys run a lot of rear toe out to make the car rotate. 4WD at the limit on pavement is always going to be a handfull, but it sure can be fast!

yes that was a fun day. i wish i could have stayed for the last 2 runs...oh well. that evo 8 was definitely fast and it was probably nice to have 4wd on some of those parts. the grass on the inside of the course defnitely needs a trimming! the tall grass made going through the go-kart part of the course crazy since i couldn't see around the next corner!

hopefully i can get reza to come out next time and we will have race tires too. let us know when the next one is....

I think the evo just need a good alignment, that should make the back come to life.
Any stock/manufacturer alignment is only good for normal people.

One of the few pictures I grabbed was of the red FD.. I think the shutter rate was at only around 1/600, so there is some of a blur
http://www.dslextreme.com/users/awah...511_red_fd.JPG

At the end of the day, I took a picture of the score boards:
http://www.dslextreme.com/users/awah...11_times_1.JPG
http://www.dslextreme.com/users/awah...11_times_2.JPG

I'm pretty sure I had the best score for 'cones killed', that day..

I was out there in the traction-limited 240SX. Um, still trying to sort out the alignment :P

Thanks for replying guys. That was my first autocross and I was so happy all the FDs were there. I didn't know everyone except the silver one is on the forums. I would love to talk to you some more on the next one. Im going to actually race in about a year. I am working on a bored stroked block for my 240z. Then you can kick my *** anyways. That one Z was putting out over 300 hp or something. It was nuts. That cam is almost not streetable.

I'm sure that the next time we see the EVO it will be on Kumhos, and in the very near future ultra high end shocks. This was the first event for the car. Did you guys see the motortrend top speed shootout which included the EVO? 0-60 in 4.56 Yikes.......
PS I gather Alex, you are not a first timer...
We did have a problem with some first timers being rude to the airport guard, and some speeding leaving the event. PLEASE set an example. (I believe they were some folks from the Honda forum, go figure...)

Hey, it was cool meeting everyone and I had a great time at my first auto-cross. Thanks for the invite Carl and I'll definitely try to make the next one.

BTW, that's me driving (poorly... lol) in the pic... cool...

So you guys were on a go kart course? That looks like a lot of fun. I have done one auto-x in a truck yard and it was awesome . . . but I need my FC not my Integra (waaaaaaay too much understeer).

have any of you guys seen an RX-8 do an autocross or 350z. Im very interested in both of them. I hear the 350z is alright for A/C right from the factory. Someone had one at the autocross but they didn't race it. They parked it far away in a parking lot. It was chrome silver.

I'd like to see how the new STi fairs compared to the Evo.

Road & Track has a pseudo comparo in their latest issue of the actual US spec STi. The US spec WRX STi is actually better than the Euro spec. Essentially what R&T had to say, the STi is faster in a straightline, but the Evo handles better and is more fun to drive. They complained a lot about the STi understeer ... both from the magazine testers and their professional driver.

Pretty much exactly what C/D said. They picked the (slightly slower) Evo.

Yeah. the evo is awsome on the track.. But it does have understeer.. Which is funny cause i complained about it and people said it was that my driving sucked hahah

And at the auto-x i was in i pulled the fastest time of the day.. (it was my 1st auto-x too )

So, i don't know about the 70/30 comment.. I think the car did it, not me..

Sometimes the course does it too. The past weekend SASCA auto-x found me pushing national contenders' times in SS and DP with my too soft suspension'd SM2 RX-7. Only 2 tenths off .... without having snapped off a near perfect run. Fun? .. yeah. Normal? .. oh hell no.

Well, i did let one of the instructors there take it around.. he ran a 45.0 and tookout 2 cones...

My best/fastest was a 45.2 /w 0 cones.. SO i was very happy.. that was also my best run.. my next closest was a 45.8 /w 0 cones.

But of course he only got one run..

He is known for beating most peoples times in there own car by 2-6 seconds though.

I noticed in the evo the way i got fast times was to just beat the hell out of it. it seems a little faster with the *** out too..
