The wheels I've got are super light. Although mine are 13", I believe they make other sizes too. The downside is, they're made in Great Britain, so shipping might kill the deal for you. Check out Revolution wheels.

Otherwise, if you need them just for racing, check out Diamond Racing Wheels out of Wisconsin. Even though they are steel wheels, they are still pretty light and dirt cheap.

Wheels will be used for racing only. How light is light? I looked on their website and couldn't really find anything. They just wanted me to call them.

Light enough that they won't make much of a difference until you really need to get that last 10th of a second to get a win. I would weigh mine, but I don't have a scale and they still have rubber on them. They are very popular for autocross because they are a reasonable compromise between weight and cost.

we've run the Rota RB's for a few seasons, they aren't super light, but they are cheap, and durable, and come in FB fits...

How much clearance do you have going on between the wheel/tire and the strut?
I read somewhere you have 4 inches of backspacing.

Also we installed the front two Illumina's this weekend (Now I have Illumina's all the way around) and replaced an axle half. Ended up having to build a bearing puller to get the bearing off of the axle.
Our weird noise from the right-rear is now gone with the replacement of the axle

Glad to hear you got the bearing sorted out.

The Diamond wheels have 4" backspacing. If I recall correctly, with stock springs I had about 1/2" of clearance between the spring and the 225 Hoosiers that were mounted on them.

The Revolution wheels are just about identical.

With the coilovers, I'd guess I've got about 1" to 1 1/2" of clearance.

A little more backspace might get you a tighter fit, but then you'd run into more of an issue with the tire hitting the swaybar when performing a tight turn. I still have a slight issue with this with 4" backspace, but only at extreme turning (like parking in a tight space). It's never been an issue when actually driving or racing.

Thanks for the info Kent.

Spent this weekend doing homework 90% of the time so didn't get much done. We put our wheels on and measured out some dimensions to make sure we don't buy the wrong things again.

There is a non-points event autocross this weekend so I'm hoping to get everything together to make it out there to have a shakedown of the car before the season!

Also trying to figure out what a weird noise is in the rear end after you brake. I think the brake caliper may be sticking and it needs a rebuild.

Sounds good. Best of luck if you make it to the event.

So I've really been neglecting this thread and my car dang school.
Brake caliper was rebuilt, sound is better but still there at times. It sounds like maybe the brake pad is chattering?

Anyway here are a few shots from the first event. Had a fun time minus having to run all season tires. Next event is April 24/25th and I should have tires all sorted by then!

Edit- One thing I really noticed is that having great brakes with all-seasons sucks. I was having to be very careful about braking because if I braked even 50% I was locking the wheels up. The brakes were just too powerful for those tires. Can't wait to run this thing properly!

Decided it would be more cost effective to just run STR this year. Still trying to decide on some new springs...

Another quick update-

Decided to drop the muffler since it is so heavy. Built a small turn down, pictures below.

Got my hands on a set of 949 Racing 6UL wheels. 15x8. Here is how the car sat a couple weeks ago at a lapping day.

Things are coming together nicely.

I haven't actually raced any autocrosses with the new tires - although there is an event tomorrow

As for the lapping day I was still figuring out the car and how it was going to react at speed, but I think the day went well. Ended up passing some WRX's and was sticking with an Evo for a few laps so I was happy!

We have also bought a set of RE-11's since they had a $100 rebate through April.. Was too good of a deal to pass up!
Camber plates have been purchased as well.

I've been completely enveloped in building the FSAE car, so I haven't got around to updating this..

Camber plates got on the car and we pretty much stopped working on it. I chased a vacuum leak for a long time, so it wasn't idling correctly until just recently.

I took the win in STR for the season and my dad ended up in 2nd. Didn't race enough events to qualify for a jacket though.

Everything was going good until.....

Went to school for a class, was only there for about 2 hours and this happens. Was parked in a highly visible area and still had the car broken into.. Lost my set of race wheels and tires **** happens I guess...

Anyway, the last event I participated in was a fundraiser and I drove the FSAE car instead of the rx7.

The plan for the offseason is to buy a new set of rims (probably some rota slipstreams) and throw on my old set of Kumho XS'. Not going to do much to the car, going to save the money for autocrosses and track days this year!

That really sucks man. At least you still have your car though. Congrats on the wins, keep up the great work!
