Brakes

Hey Guys, I am building a 600hp autocross car and I seriously need to upgrade the brakes but am stuck because I can't find any large disk or multi piston calipers. It is for a 1980 Rx7. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also looking for some lexan glass.

You can swap the brakes from a Turbo II, theyre bigger fornt disk with 2 piston calipers. An FB/SA with these brakes has some serious braking power. You need some kind of hub adapter, REspeed I think it is sells the kit. And if you dont already have it, the LSD rear ends from GSL FB's have rear disk brakes. Its a really easy swap, and IMO changes the car with the LSD.

I'd say trailing (for the front). Trailing puts the extra weight closer to the center of the car, slightly lowering the polar moment of inertia.

That said, if FC T-II brakes fit, why not use those? You'll be *way* better off money-wise, and they should provide plenty of stopping power in that application. Bigger rotors and more pistons don't by themselves improve brake performance. The biggest advantage you get out of the larger rotors is increased fade resistance - a trait you don't really need in auto-x.

Yes, TII's came in 5 lug, but you can also use 4 lug FC brakes.... for whatever reason. TIIs were made from 87-91. But, as sated above, your probably not going to need giant brakes in autox, but then again you sure as hell dont need 600hp. A 600 horse FB is going to be more than unmanageable on any autox course. Especially considering how limited you are to tire width. 600hp+225 wide tires=nothing but smoke.

Here's the link to Respeed: http://www.mrcmfg.com/respeed/catalog/index.php

Really great people to work with, and will answer any questions you may have for application, installation, and sourcing the other parts needed. There are also some writeups in the 1st gen section from people who have installed this kit.

Why don't you think that the stock brakes will work in an autocross? 600HP or not you can only go so fast on a solo II course. Brakes just are not that important. Besides your car should not be that heavy.

I ran a C Prepared Mustang for a number of years (400HP - 3000lbs w/driver - 16x12" wheels/Hoosier slicks) and found that the most import thing are brakes that are not easy to lock and are light weight. I put 12" vette brakes on my mustang for all of those reasons. Low clamping pressures at the caliper and much lighter than the stock brakes.

None of the fast CP cars have much bigger than 11-12" diameter disks and some of them have 500-600HP and they can USE IT! Keep in mind that a CP cars typically weighs 3000-3300Ibs with driver.

The stock RX7 brakes on my IT car easily manage its 2500lb as raced weight with Hawk blue pads. In fact I have never had brake fad in a race.
