better to drift a 1.5 way or tack a 2way?

better to drift a 1.5 way or tack a 2way?

I'm in the market for a new diff to drop into my FC pumpkin

the car is kinda multipurpose.. as i haven't decided which one to focus on yet.. Track or Drift.. with a tad of autoX here and there...


the car currently has Tein SS Coil overs's on it and Strut bars...

but the stock Clutch type diff is worn out.. and not holding much at all


i've heard 1.5way is better for Track/AutoX

and a 2Way is better for drifting..

it appears i can't have my cake and eat it...


so what is a "lesser compromise" basically?

buying a 2way diff and trying to iron out the understeer with suspension tuning?

or buying a 1.5 way and trying to learn to drift with it?

I saw a diff in some 'hot import tuner' mag that was adjustable. it could be either a 2 way or 1.5... it was quite expensive though. You should go to a news stand that has those magazines for people who do drfit and show stuff. They have their ad's in there.

my budget is 1000 or less..

Cusco 1.5 way , if you know , you can drift Auto X , trac days ,etc

i love my torsen! i am going autoX-ing on sunday i will let you know how it performs. i was in the same boat as you. my stock diff was shot and the pinion seal was pissing fluid. so i put in a torsen. i did a write up if you want to do it yourself. so far on the street it performs awesome, i can't compare to an aftermarket lsd but at least i never have to rebuild it.

FWIW...

I replaced the Torsen on my FD with a KAAZ 1.5-way after grenading it on the strip. From what I understand about 1.5-way vs 2-way, you'd probably want 1.5-way as it's the best of both worlds:

The only thing you would lose is some of the ability to lock up the rear by letting off the gas, but believe me, that doesn't seem to be a problem to me at least in auto-crossing. Plus I figure in drifting you'd be using the parking brake for that duty anyway. Mine is actually locking up TOO much during acceleration, despite me turning about 20% of the plates around, which is causing bad understeer, at least until I get them spinning.....

From my experience: Torsen is best for autocrossing and street, KAAZ is better for drag racing and drifting. The KAAZ really pops and shakes the car a lot when driving on the street. I'm not sure about on the track. I think the KAAZ can be good but it needs to be closer to 60% lockup apparently to reduce the understeer tendancies.

tailhappy - i changed my kaaz from 100% to 33%. it is perfect now. the street driving is nice and quiet; no more clunking! no more understeer at autocross on tight turns. and damn, at the drag strip, i got a 1.51 short time.

Whew, 33% really sounds low! But I'd definitely like to get rid of some of the clunking, and more importantly the horrible understeer under mild acceleration and cornering. But I do like being able to lock it up and go sideways when I want....does it still lock ok at 33%?

My diff has started slowly leaking around the seals between the halves of the pumpkin. I don't know if the mechanic I had install the LSD didn't do a good job but I suspect it's the violent torquing and popping that might be too much for the housing to handle. All the bolts are tight.

That's actually very good to know. I wasn't sure whether to be ill with the mechanic (cuz I REALLY dread having to pull it out again) or whether it was just an after-effect of adding more stress to the housing.

At least it's slow enough of an ooze, the only bad effect seems to be the mess under the body. I don't think I've ever seen a drip, and after a year of driving, I don't think I had to put more than a 1/4 of a quart back in.
