About rotary resurrection

so i was referred to this site by one of the people on this thread.........and its a good deal and all but i had no idea that its in Morristown tennessee....i mean how the hell am i supposed to get my car out there and stuff. I mean you can ship cars and stuff but mine is a daily driver and that would be horrible for me heh.

Anyway anyone have anything to say about rotary resurrection, like recent engine costs and stuff, quality work and all that.

thanks guys

you could just ship the engine, assuming that you are getting a blown motor rebuilt, why are you still driving the car around anyways?

also, nothing but good things from RR, but hes not doing any more rebuild work until May.

you know i would really love to find someone to rebuild it in socal, but everywhere i look its like 2.8 grand 3 grand 3.2 grand, the cheapest i've found is 2800 dollars at rotary racing in santa ana.....and thats labor and rebuild cost NORMALLY........meaning without extra parts, such as a new rotor or all those super special gaskets and stuff involved.........rotary resurrection does it for 1000 dollars plus a little extra for gaskets and other stuff, plus paint for free. i wish i could find someone that would do this for me in cali for the same price...

I've never seen or heard of any bad engines coming from Kevin. Also if you're serious, and you contact him, he'd be more than willing to help you arrange the shipping of your engine. I don't think he's even taking any more work until May though. You'd have to contact him and see what's going on.

From what Ive seen Kevin is awesome.. Seems to have very good customer service. I dont know him personally and only exchanged a few PMs with him about technical stuff.. But when my engine is needing it, He will definitly be the person rebuilding my engine

Have you talked to "Karack" here on the forums? He rebuilds them in Norcal. That's at least driving distance. I've heard alot of good things about him as well. Just a thought.

I'm really not understanding the confusion here...you are upset that you were referred to someone in Tennessee but you are going to be inconvenienced by a rebuild regardless because it is your daily driver.

Buddy...hate to tell you this...but if you get your motor rebuilt, it's not going to be a 1 day thing...you aren't going to have a car for a little bit whether you do it locally or send it across the country.

I wish good rotary engine guys with the rep of Kevin were on every street corner and you could "Have it your way"...but they aren't.

So think about this...while it may be cheaper to have the work done by Kevin in Tennessee...when you include shipping and time involved is it going to be just as expensive as it would be to get it done locally? Even without the time loss factored in?

Sounds like you haven't thought this through very well...if you can't be without your car for any length of time then your best bet is going to be someone within a few hours of you and sac up on the price and have the convenience of getting it done quicker...which is still going to be a very loose term.

Logic is your friend =D

Kevin does not accept whole cars anyway, so you would have to pull the motor yourself and ship it to him.

He charges $1000 and that is if he doesn't have to change anything out of spec. If you have a "bad" rotor or housing, the price jumps up more. I learned these these engines are like cracker jack boxes. You don't know what's in them until you open them up.

Logistically, it will cost you just the same. You have so many talented builders over there. Do more research........

You need to find out what all the prices are for from the various shops. Kevin's (Rotary Resurrection) prices are generally for the rebuild only. Which means, you pull your engine (removing all accessories) and send it to him, he rebuilds it and sends it back, then you attach all the accessories and install it. There is no R&R engine (Removal & Re-installation) charge as it won't be done by Kevin.

Some of the local shops may be quoting you a price to do the R&R as well as the rebuild or they may be just quote a rebuild price.

I would suggest you first figure out if you are trying to get a "turn-key" solution (where when the car is done, you just drive it away) or just get the motor rebuilt and you'll handle the rest of the labor of the R&R yourself. Then you can start comparing prices when you know exactly what will be done for the quoted amounts.

I just picked up a rebuild from Kevin last week and dropped off a couple more blocks for him to rebuild. I recommend him highly. He does accept cars but it just depends on what he has going on at what time. He has built over 20 engines for me without issue.

Another reason to miss DAVE (guitarjunkie28). He was the socal rebuild king. If I were you I would go with KARACK if you want a good, in CA rebuilder, as already metioned. He is in norcal, but has never had a unhappy customer that I have seen in my years on the 7club. I agree that Kevin is awesome, but then you have to pull the motor. Do you have any tools? Where in socal are ya? I could help ya out, depending on what you need.

Karack is the most reputable that I know of, and he is a strait up friendly guy. And from what I know he is a good discount rebuilder. I'd go by reputations and past experiences posted by people over the forum though.

Wow, lot's of confusion in this thread.

1) I do accept whole cars for remove/rebuild/reinstall. As clearly stated on my website, the R&R charge adds $1000 in labor on top of whatever the normal shortblock rebuild costs are. You also usually need gaskets for the accessories/manifolds which are $100-200 anytime I assemble the longblock.

2)IF you have a blown apex motor the replacement parts (used) cost $200-400 depending on condition/year/model most of the time. The $1000 is a shortblock base price for all 86+ rotaries that assumes a fully rebuildable core, which most people do not have. The average cost is about $1400-1500 for the shortblock itself on a blown engine with 100k+ miles.

3) By the time you do shipping both ways from the west coast you lose about $500-600 right there, negating most savings you'd get here. I gladly do work for anyone who asks, but it makes more sense to go with someone on the west coast and have somewhat local support when you have a question or problem.

4) My turnaround is sometimes an issue for people with a daily driver, I am usually 3-4 weeks behind at any given time. This is also one reason you save money here versus the larger shops who give you the privelege and convenience of core exchange, because they have had to go to the trouble of buying core parts and investing funds up front for seal kits and pre-rebuilds. They also have the manpower to keep ahead of demand, so you do pay more. IF you're one of these people that can't do without the car then you will need to pay extra for that fact.
