Tuning Timing on
I have a freshly overhauled motor.. stock ports new housings and replaced every bearing gasket and rubber piece possible
the mods of the car (power wise):
DP/MP/CB
rich man non seq (no rats nest, ported WG incl)
walbro 255
hard pipes on stock IC
HKS twin power
apexi intakes
PFC+DL
Fuel is 95 RON, which is ~92 PON
i've tweaked the stock mod INJ base map to smooth out of the drivability issues,
runs well now
i'd like to tweak and fix the timing now
i've noticed there's some random spots where knock sensor would show 90!
i retarded the timing a little.. it went down a bit slowly then stopped and went up again (hit 70ish) so i went Back to the original value, and the kept raising it, and eventually the knock fell back into the 30's :S
What kind of knock levels are considered dangerous? What should I be aiming to keep it below?
I'd like some general guidelines on tuning the timing..
At the moment I'll be tuning on the streets with the LM1 and my Defi BF EGT gauge (pre turbo)
We have a local dyno jet here, but it's not the load type.. I can only do the usual 4th gear pull on it…
Basically what are the tell tale signs of good timing and tuning?
Obviously they should be relatively smooth, high timing out of boost as rpm rises, and lower timing as boost rises
But I'd like more specifics than that..
I tried signing up for the Datalogit FD3S e-group, but my application got rejected.. So I posted here instead
Help is appreciated.. I spent a lot of time, money and effort on this motor, and would like to see it last a long and healthy life
There's 700 miles on the motor and it's on it's 2nd oil and filter.. I've only ran her up to ~5,500 rpm and ~8psi while doing the A/F tuning
But break in is nearing the end and would to finally put her through the paces
I've found the really old database of PFC maps from back in 03, but I'd think in the last 5yrs things have changed quite a bit so I was weary about using them
Thank you

PM cewrx7r1 about buying the tuning notes, which gives access to the Yahoo group. There must've been some kind of mixup.
The Apexi timing map has some erratic spots, especially on the split map. Safest thing for you to do is set all your split to 12 from P16 +, then get to the dyno and see if changing it does anything to your power or EGT. Read the "advancing timing at high RPM" and "how many run no split timing" threads in the single turbo archive section.
I think the best way to look at knock is by looking at a curve rather than map watch. Map watch can be useful but also misleading. I like to run watches + 4 plots on the screen at once (each with its own separate scale) for WOT tuning: RPM, boost (I prefer PIM absolute actually), AFR, and knock, or I may substitute one of those for leading advance. I'm stuck doing street tuning (which means 2nd gear pulls mostly if I don't want a speeding ticket) right now so it's important for me to get an idea whether I am getting "real" knock or not, and when you hit 60 counts at 0psi and 2500rpm it's fair to say that it's just something rattling around one the car, especially in 2nd gear.

thanks for the info bro..
q question about split timing..
just want to clarify, when u want to set ur split timing.. we are manipulating the IGT to meet the IGL and leave the IGL static correct? or are we supposed to play with both of them?
eg
IGL 10 IGT 7 split is 3 and we want 6
a) IGL 10 IGT 4
b) IGL 13 IGT 7
c) IGL 12 IGT 6 (i.e a combo of both IGT and IGL)

Split is a huge pain to set up if you don't use the datalogit split table function.
Go into the datalogit software. Click IGN T tab, then check "display split." Just set the split there. Now, once you set the split table, if you modify the leading ignition it will affect the split. So what I usually do is go into the split tab, set up the split I want, then highlight the entire split map and press control C to copy it to clipboard. Then go into the leading map, change what you want to change. Go back to the split map and you will notice changes because leading timing is different but trailing is not, resulting in a different split map. Highlight the whole table and hit ctrl-v to paste your old split map.
