Interface not responding, Error 76 and all that

I have been tearing my hair out over the past few days trying to get my previously-fine FC Edit to Datalogit (v.1.110) serial connection to work. I kept getting the dreaded 'interface not responding' and 'error 76'.

I tried all sorts of incantations from information I found searching here: turning on the car first, turning on FC Edit first, turning the key on and off while connected etc. and kept getting the same errors. I tried a different laptop with a different OS, a connection through a laptop docking port, several different serial cables, a multitude of different RS-232 connection settings, uninstalling and reinstalling an updated RS-232 driver (and who the hell even uses RS-232 any more?), every COM port I could find, and even bought a serial-to-USB connector - all to no avail.

Eventually this evening I decided to uninstall and reinstall FC Edit and, bugger it, didn't the thing start working perfectly immediately.

I remember trying this in the past when I had transient errors, but it had no effect. I'm certainly not convinced that it is a general solution - but it is something other people can try if they get the same errors.
