bozo needs guru

i recently (for the first time) attempted to help a friend fire up his Datalogit and was unable to get readings. i was using my Gateway Solo 9300 laptop w Windows 98. my initial panel read: "Error Opening Com 1." i checked my com ports and they seemed to be o k. the next panel read: "FC EDIT interface not responding." the next panel read: "FC EDIT run-time '7' out of memory" and finally: C:\Program Files\FCEDIT_FD35\FC_EDIT.exe. there is not enough free memory to run this program. Quit one or more programs."
i had no programs open and normally have most of my memory capacity free. perhaps related to my problem was that when i returned home and attempted to reboot my computer it wouldn't start. i contacted Gateway and they determined my computer had crashed. i sent it in for service and they replaced the cpu. the reason i ask for advice is that in order to help my friend i have to travel a couple of hours so i would like to know if something is wrong w my computer setup before making the drive.
thanks or any help,
howard coleman

Howard,

It sounds like the laptop had some serial port issues. Then on top of that, you may have had some software issues. Then, perhaps some hardware issues with the laptop.

When you get it back, let me know and I can walk you through it over the phone. No sweat.
