Quality Air Filter...NOT!

A few months ago, we had a 2nd gen RX-7 come to the shop with the owner asking us to fix a high idle issue that had just sprung up. Rob checked that the throttle cable was slack and not binding. Then, he made some trial changes to adjustments on the throttle body, the results of which had him shaking his head. He stood up and stated, "it's acting like there is something jamming the throttle plates." Pulling the intake snorkel proved that suspicion correct, when he found little pieces of fibrous material wedged in there. The material looked familiar, so Rob popped the top off the air cleaner assembly and found this...D'oh!

The damn filter material was sucked down into the air flow meter intake neck and bits and pieces started tearing off the ragged end. A few more miles might have seen a larger chunk tear off and cause serious damage to the motor. Fortunately, it was caught in time. After replacing that POS with a quality air filter and cleaning the debris out of the throttle body, not only was the idle speed back to normal but the car -- suprise -- made a LOT more power. Whoda thunk it?

Just wanted to share that story...

Their oil filters aren't much better. The anti drainback on their Ford filters doesn't work very well. It causes a cold startup knock on the Modular V-8's. I don't buy anything Fram anymore, except maybe a round carburetor air filter, and that's if it's the only brand available.
