Stay with rotary. It's easier in the long run.
However, IF... IF I was ever forced to step off into darkness, as Hades12 directs, I'd have to do something totally off-the-wall, like... very old school 250 6-cylinder with 196 heads and three (3) 2-barrels over siamesed intake ports. Capable of 500 horses if put together right and a real screamer. I'd think the size and weight would be alot less than v-8 and easy to work on for a boinger. Maybe that would be a better project for a z-car or a little truck.

There's an "Other Engine Conversions" forum under the "Rotary Performance" forum.. I'm moving this thead to there, because it seems people are simply going to flame you, assuming that you want to put a PISTON engine in. (when in fact, you asked about "ANY" other engines)
If you would like to stay rotary, I'd say the most common swaps for first gens are
1. 13b engine from an '84-85 GSL-SE
2. Turbo II engine from a second Gen
For either of these, there are tons of threads with info, just search this section.
