How about an electric motor?

How about converting an RX-7 to electric motor drive? I saw such a project car advertised a few years ago (partly finished, about $1500, IIRC).

There's a kit for the Porsche 914, Geo Metro, Rabbli, etc., but they run about $10,000.

I would think you'd not want to just hang an electric motor on the front of the transmission, but rather tear out the whole driveline and rebuild it with motors close to the wheels. For one thing, you'd free up a lot of space for batteries, for another you'd get higher efficiency.

Even if the car is just sitting around you could be recharging the batteries with solar panels.

I'm not thinking hybrid here, even though I think the rotary would be great in a hybrid application for a larger vehicle.

Originally I was interested in this subject for a replacement engine when one of my old FB engines dies, but they just keep on running, smooth as ever, as if they were going to last forever. So now I'm motivated by the combination of high gas prices and the relentless sun whose solar energy is being wasted heating up the asphalt in the driveway and the shingles on the roof. Better that energy should go into batteries for me to use running errands.

So I figure to sell 2 FBs and get a roller, or an electric RX-7 project, probably in an FB.
