Awesome work. I've always like the 1uz. One critque.

Is there more than 2 6mm bolts holding this motor up??

Seems like it would be pretty easy to make a motor mount like the LSx kit I sell for the FCs.

They use the stock FC motor mount holes.

If there were more than one 1uz FC on the road right now, there might be a market for a set to be produced

I do like the 1uz and think it would be nice if the combo were to take off.

There are more than one of this combo, just not in the U.S. I got the idea from the swap in the MKIII supra. The supra has more room vertically, but it still fits. I had to cut some of the bracing in the hood to make this motor fit as nicely as it does. The motor was in and out 6 or 7 times before it stayed.
As far as the mounts, they are held in place on the frame with 2 8mm grade 10 fasteners. Its stronger than it seems. You can't see the whole mount in that picture, but its more like a cradle. Those bolts keep it from moving side to side. They don't support the weight. However, they are plenty as I can lift the car with the motor using the motor hooks and a cherry picker.
However, i agree, the type of mounts you pictured are nicer. The pedestals on the motor sit too far forward on the 1uz though.

Not a big fan of V8 swaps in the sevens, but I will have to admit that this is one of the best combos that I have seen so far. Mad props for the hard work, and it looks like a damn good payoff

Then use the front subframe holes, like the ones I have the machined aluminum inserts in, in the pic. The GM pedistols are reversable, and I was going to flip them and use the front holes.

eat pez, it works except for the interference on the drivers side with the steering rack. The pedestals are non reversible on the 1uz and they sit almost directly above the rack. I appreciate the input, but this isn't exactly the same situation as an lsx.
Nitroracer, ask the questions in the thread...

Where did you find the pilot bearing?
Hows the clutch grab with using the 3/8 in adapter?
Do you have more pictures? if not, can you take more close pictures? radiator mounts, valve cover to strut tower clearance.

The pilot bearing was a lucky find in a package from a previous clutch kit for my rx7. I didn't get any part numbers, however, if you have a supplier of bearings for machinery near you; you should be able to take measurements of the input shaft and the inside diameter of the crankshaft and have them look up one for you. I didn't look at the brand nor the part number. Like I said, not the documentary type.
The adapter has no affect on how well the clutch grabs. It could affect how it disengages but in this case, there is no problem. I just remounted the clutch slave further into the fork and it works fine. No slipping, no grinding. The adapter plate has an I.D. .25" larger than the O.D. of the flywheel ring gear.
As far as the clearance between the strut towers... There is over 4" of clearance on either side. I was able to fit the motor back enough to fit my strut tower bar in front of the intake manifold. I'll see about taking more pictures here in the next few days.

To be honest, anyone attempting this project I highly suggest using the toyota r154 or w58 box with this motor. Mostly because there were a few "special" things I had to deal with that the average person will not be able to or doesn't have the resources to deal with. All parts are available to convert the two toyota boxes on the 1uz and the shifter will be in a better location. Mine moved back 3" so my center console doesn't fit and I'll be making something to cover things up.

this adapter i plan on using will be made on a cnc machine. i dont plan on moving the engine back. Im also thinking about making a flywheel for it, so that i can retain the rx7 pressure plate. i plan on cutting the radiator mounts off so i can place the radiator in a upright position if needed so that the motor can fit. thats the reason im asking a lot of questions. you so far, are the first one ive seen running.
for the pilot bearing, i was thinking maybe using a sleve that would slip over the output shaft of the transmission, so that it would just slide into the orig toyota pilot bearing.
i asked for pictures, due to also turbo placement, and if there is enough room behind the passanger headlight.

The adapter I have is also cnc'd by a good friend of mine.
There is no such thing as the stock alignment bearing for this motor. They never made a manual transmission that bolts to it. There is plenty of room behind the driver and passenger headlights for a turbo or 2. Especially if you mount the radiator vertically. I'll try to get some pictures posted tomorrow.

Oh yeah, the motor is roughly 7" longer than the rotary plus whatever thickness your adapter plate is. Keep that in mind. You can take measurements and go from there to gauge your clearances.

Here are some more pictures of how the motor sits in the engine bay.

Great job on the swap man. I'm knee deep on doing the same swap. 1uz w/ w58, custom trans adapter, hydraulic throwout bearing setup, custom motor mounts and trans mounts all done. I have an early 1uz out of a LS and had to swap sumps. Having a hell of a sorting the right parts for a clutch setup. I have a modified 3zve flywheel from Superrunner (from the lextreme boards). He's just down in Provo. He told me it would accept either the 3zve clutch or a 7mgte. Either I've been sent 2 wrong clutches, because I ordered both after one didn't fit, or he has given me the wrong flywheel. Hopefully I will sort this out soon. I'm just down in Ogden. Keep us updated as you add the turbo.

Looks like you have pretty good space around the motor to work on things. The FC's certainly have a nice size engine bay for swaps.

I'm pretty sure that you'll use the same clutch pressure plate as I'm using. As well, you'll use the supra n/a clutch disk. Give it a shot. Early camry v6 pressure plate, or mr2 turbo, all the same. Pretty sure from just looking around for a minute that you can use the entire clutch kit from the mr2 or camry. Check it out. The 3vz and 1mz use very similar flywheels and clutches

Very nice guys! I hope everyone's project comes along smoothly. Its not exactly an easy one because of the transmission/clutch problem, but it is a rock solid motor. I've never been one to do it just because everyone else does it so I'm glad I'm at the start of this thing
Any other questions are welcome. I will do my best to answer them as they come.
