IT'S ALIVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!

There was no power to the injectors or ignitor so i bypassed it and ran power directly... seems to work fine now... I'll dig into it more in a little bit but in the mean time i'm a happy camper!

sounds nice yo!
allot better then it would with the original motor. lol

Sketch_hs 06-25-09 05:12 PM

UPDATE!

* Dropped off the drive shaft this morning, should be done tomorrow! Measurement from tip of output shaft to flange of rx7 T-II LSD Diff was 35 9/16 inch

* Exhaust is done (ouch welding burns!)

Took a while because I had to make everything (including the turbo flange) from scrap! It's a bit ugly but has great clearance everywhere and a flex pipe. Stock Rx7 cat removed :D

Sounds almost like a stock motor with the stock mufflers not loud at all very sleeper for someone who doesn't know rotary engines well. But if I pull up to another rx7 they might be confused!

I still need to hook up the clutch line and power steering lines, make all the charge pipes and finish the intake

Oh yeah then put the hood on a take it for a test drive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Actually i'll leave the hood off for that :D

Sketch_hs 06-25-09 05:15 PM

* The harness and injectors + ignitor gets power through the two fat black and orange wires on the gray harness connector*

my_tinker_toy_fd 06-26-09 12:35 AM

yo Sketch_hs, how's your hood fitment with the 1jz? very nicely done we should throw a little get together meet sometimes.

I DROVE IT TODAY! Was pretty easy on it but this car hauls now!

Doesn't really feel to heavy, seems to handle nearly the same so far

lots of little things to finish up... sure sounds good/different

interesting fact:

The mechanical vehicle speed sending unit from the supra r154 trans works perfectly with the stock rx7 speedometer cable. Also the speedometer seems pretty accurate! Very convenient!

FbDrift 06-28-09 07:54 PM

wow great swap! sounds amazing...i love I6 turbo's.

keep up the great work!

Do you have any pics of the motor mounts?

just wondering if you ever got my PM???...lol

HOW TO MAKE 1JZ MOUNTS

Just make pedestals from the subframe and weld them up strong!

Use the stock mounts brackets and mounts. Pull the stock motor and grind the coating off the subframe around where you are going to weld on the new mounts.

I used 5/16 inch mild steel and a mig welder. I used a sawzall to cut the metal, a plasma cutter would be a LOT faster and easier!

To get them right, place the drive train in the car and position it perfectly using jacks and blocks of wood etc.

Took me 2 hours to get it perfectly in place. TAKE YOUR TIME TO MAKE IT PERFECT!. Then start building the mounts and tack weld everything in place.

I first made the top of the mount, about a 2inch square with a hole in the center.

Bolt the top plate to the mount with the engine in place. Now use cardboard to help you design the sides of the mount (3) . Make the parts one at a time and tack weld them in place. Remember the motor will drop down a little once the weight is on the mounts so make them a little high by about 2-3 mm

pull the motor back out and weld them up, make sure you clean the metal before welding and paint it once it's cooled down so it doesn't rust

the trans mount is similar. make a plate with the four holes that attaches to the stock r154 mount. Now make two plates for each stock rx7 mounting location, the ones with two bolts. Leave some extra room from the two plates going towards in the inside of the transmission tunnel.

The plate on the transmission should be wide enough so that you can make a connecting plates from the bolt plates to the trans plate. make them out of cardboard to get the shape and clearances correct and tack weld them in place. Then remove the mount and weld it up. Remember you'll need clearance for the speedometer cable! Make sure you paint it when you are done so it doesn't rust.

And that's how you do the mounts!

Sketch_hs 06-29-09 07:24 PM

WIRING!

You need to wire the grounds, battery power, and switched ignition power to the correct places on the ecu connectors. Use a pin out to help you!

Then you need to wire your rx7 fuel pump to come on with the ignition and wire ignition switched power to the 2jz harness. There are two thick black and orange wires that supply the power to the injectors and ignitor etc.

for your rx7 gauges, you'll need to use the stock sender unit with some adapters, then wire them to the dash etc.

You will retain your rx7 charging and starting harness but modify it to fit the new starter and alternator.

That's about it.

blue87t2 06-30-09 11:22 AM

could you explain what pieces you used on your speedo, mines been running for awhille; but i guess i never really tried to hook it up. I have the r154

NoPistons! 06-30-09 01:38 PM

Great thread!

You do know 2jzswap.com sells a driveshaft specifically for this swap, right? Where did/are you getting yours done and for how much?

Also, did you modify the shifter or just use 2jzswap.coms shifter extention kit?

blue87t2 06-30-09 02:25 PM

tech 2 just released the kit a short while ago, i had to build everything myself, the drive shaft totaled around 550 to be made locally.

i would highly suggest spending the money vs trying to cheap out on the shifter extension, unless you know somone that can handle it. i did my own extension, it works but it could be alot better.

the na mk4 tranny fits like a glove from when a another of my friends was gonna go manual, but ended up going to a th400

Sketch_hs 06-30-09 04:58 PM

I had the drive shaft made from a stock rx7 drive shaft and the transmission end of a mk3 turbo drive shaft. Cost to make it was $118.00, plus $50 for the mk3 turbo drive shaft... it's very simple for them to make it...

I'm using the tech2 shifter extension, work great.

You need a mechanical sending unit for the mk3 turbo, the rx7 speedo cable will go right in and thread on... seems to read a little slow but close enough!

Yeah the mk4 na trans would fit perfectly but that trans is known to blow up around 400hp, I actually blew one on my supra at about 500whp :/

If you guys need any info just ask!

did you give them the parts? mine was all new and they said the mkiii slip yoke was very expensive, my parts for new tube, ends, u-joints and yoke was almost 400 then about 160 in labor.

I'll have to look into the speedo thing.

have you modified your hood, i had to cut the crap out of it on the intake manifold side, now i'm waiting for it to rub a little more so i can tell were it's hitting on the turbo side. pics if you got any of the under side of the hood, also do you have pics of your steering rack clearance?

Sketch_hs 06-30-09 07:25 PM

I gave them the turboII drive shaft and a front part of mk3 turbo shaft. I actually got the complete mk3 turbo shaft for $50 in great shape. Not sure why you would get a new part when the used ones are everywhere!

I just got a crappy turbo hood today I cut up to fit. Almost done, main problem once the webbing is cut is the front turbo outlet pipe. It just hits the hood. I could lower the engine down a little but it might hit the steering rack. I'm pretty close to that as it is.

I'll try to get some pictures of the clearances for you guys.

Have you guys been able to get the stock oil pressure gauge and water temp working? I don't have a problem installing the sender units but im not sure where they are wired in.

Also, which wires are for the reverse lights on the transmission harness? Would be nice to have that work!

i use the stock oil pressure, use your rotary oil pressure unit the car is used to seeing it, i coul not get the 1jz sending unit to work. I had to put a straight mpt fitting so it would reach because the sending unit is so large, the wire for it is in the starting/ charging harness

the water temp is in the little harness coming for the driver side I think.

go to granneys speed shop and look in the manuals section and there is on for electrical.

I don't know why my reverse lights don't work, i hooked the switch coming off of the trans but they did not work..i need to look into it more.

I looked at the speedo cable and it should work if i had a cable laying around, my turbo cable came apart so the spring on the inside was not there, i had a auto cable laying around so i took it apart and found it is different length. there should be away to calibrate the speedo head.

Laz93RX7 07-02-09 07:33 AM

how did you end up fabing the mounts got any pics, looking to do the same swap.

Sketch_hs 07-03-09 12:56 AM

okay the stock 1jz water temp sending unit seem to work fine wired to the rx7 tach.

My motor runs nice and cool, very solid and steady on a 95* day.

The 1jz ignitor can be wired directly into the rx7 tach and it will work BUT the tach will read too high! There are plenty of solutions to fix this but i'm going to try and find the cheapest way possible :D

Drove it over 50 miles today and it's running great. Motor is strong and smooth, wish it had a little more low end but the top end power is impressive, though i never even took it past 5500 yet.

I'm very happy with the swap so far. Needs a lot more cleaning up and finishing work but the car is 90% there. Oh and it really needs a less restrictive intercooler! I'm using a TINY mr2 turbo intercooler just to get it running. Upgrade will come soon there!

Next will be the power steering high pressure hose and fixing the brakes. They were covered in rust when i got the car! They still work great but are noisy as hell...

More later

blue87t2 07-03-09 02:34 AM

cheapest way is to adjust the tach, with the knob in the back...http://members.tripod.com/~grannys/rx7tachrecal.html i did mine as a v6 and so did my other friend with a jz swap, but with the series four we need to put a resistor in, but thats what the rev limiter is for, mine is about 200 rpm off, so someday i will solder in the resistor.

Sketch_hs 07-04-09 01:24 AM

Today I resurfaced the rotors, put some hawk HP pads and super ATE blue fluid. Not completely bed in yet but so far the brakes now feel AWESOME. Stock 4 piston front brakes are a nice thing.

Tomorrow i'll see if I can get the stock boost gauge working and the oil pressure gauge too.

Then i need to hook up the check engine light to the ecu, find someone to make a power steering line, trim the hood some more to fit nicer...

I've put over 100 miles on it now, running strong!

Video soon guys

Sketch_hs 07-06-09 06:05 PM

UPDATE

got the power steering line made locally for 48 bucks. Looks great and it's rated at 4000 psi! lol

i'll try it out when the engine cools down :D

Sketch_hs 07-06-09 08:46 PM

UPDATE!

tach is calibrated (might be reading a tiny bit low but it works a lot better now)

Power steering works! Wow the car is a lot easier to drive now. Unfortunately the steering is a little light for my taste, the supra pump is more powerful than the rx7s and the rx7s pump had a computer controlled servo motor that changed the assist. Overall it's much much better than no power steering. It almost feels like an electric assist rack...

parking lots are now a breeze.

in other news the PCV was completely shot, replaced it but it's still burning some oil from take off and revving in neutral. pretty annoying but i'm guessing it's just valve stem seals or something, compression and leak down test was near perfect and it idles perfectly smooth. Could also be a turbo going out... hopefully not the rings!

It's a common problem with the JZ series motors, especially over 60k and if the motor sat for a while which this one obviously did!

JebusFC 07-06-09 10:04 PM

Hey man, your swap looks sweet! Heres a bit of info on adjusting the P/S on a 1J in case you were interested, just went through this on my swap. Feels much better now. Takes all of about 10 minutes.

Find the pressure fitting on the pump, remove the hose then there is another fitting screwed into the pump. it needs a 24/25mm spanner. once this is removed you will see a valve, pull that out, behind that will be a big spring (pressure relief valve spring) cut a coil or two off this then reinstall as you pulled it to pieces then refill the system and try it. All this will do is open the relief valve earlier so more pressure bypasses the rack, giving less power assist.

I ended up cutting about 3/4 of mine off, but mine was fairly excessive to begin with.

Sketch_hs 07-07-09 06:02 PM

I changed the oil .. it was very dirty already because the motor sat. Also got the stock down pipe and welded that to the down pipe i had made from scratch. No more exhaust leaks and a nicer power band!

Seems to be burning a lot less oil now, hopefully it will go away on it's own...

Oh man....

Take off the front sway bar and lower the front of the engine, it will fit with stock hood with a little bit of trimming underneath.

take off the front sway bar? Are you nuts?!
lol

i'd rather trim the hood than remove the sway bar. function > fashion

Sketch_hs 07-08-09 04:13 PM

this is strange.

I did a compression test today, perfect results

180 - 180 - 185 - 180 - 180 - 180

Visual inspection of the plugs looks great, no sign of oil burning or anything else bad. Completely dry.

Visually inspected the piston tops the best I could, they are all very dry no sign of oil burning or leaking valve stem seals

Started it up and zero start up smoke (same as always with this engine)

Once it warmed up i did some neutral revving after letting it idle for various lengths of time. Very light smoke on some throttle stabs, nothing unusual and it was very faint.

Took it on the exact same drive today where it produced smoke visibly yesterday, today nothing! Same conditions, different results!

I'm starting to wonder if it's not just old carbon or leakage burning off... the tests and behavior is not typical of any particular kind of failure.

I still suspect the valve stem seals could use replacement. But as of right now it's not smoking noticeably, or on start up.

Aren't engines with unknown history fun?

I'm going to try and hook up the wideband and she just how she's running. Maybe put a cat back in the exhaust, it's kinda stinky :D

Sketch_hs 07-09-09 01:39 PM

50 more miles, smokeless! Good news.

I got a nice high flow cat for it last night... going to put it on soon

man that is going to be wicked

CAPTN_SLAPPIN 07-09-09 02:24 PM

Sketch_hs 07-09-09 04:21 PM

2100 shipped came with everything

Sketch_hs 07-10-09 11:14 AM

UPDATE:

http://www.autogassolutions.co.uk/fi...ng_signsvg.png

I put the high flow cat on and it works great! Smells really clean, quieted it down a bit and a slight loss in power and spool. Worth it for me right now, i'll gain that and more back later with a nicer downpipe, high flowing catback and turbo y-pipe + more boost and a nice FMIC!

It is however leaking a little bit from the transmission :( I suspect output shaft seal where the drive shafts slip yoke goes in. I have a part already... guess i have to do that today!

Sketch_hs 07-11-09 03:37 PM

UPDATE:

Transmission leak fixed. Tiny slit in the tail shaft seal. Fortunately I was able to replace it with the transmission on, just pulled the drive shaft and I was able to get to it.

While I had the y pipe off to get to it I noticed it had a huge crack so I welded it up. Now the exhaust sounds way better, pulls a little smoother and it's actually VERY quiet with that and the cat on there. Too quiet really, sounds like a stock camry or something until those turbos start to spool.

Also the low end feels a little more torquey... got a little sideways in a corner today :D

Engine seems to have completely stopped burning oil. Very happy about that.

I'm planning on taking it up to tahoe with the wife next week. Should have some good video footage and pics of the adventure, hopefully all goes well!

decided to clean up the hood a little more, nothing final but looks nicer for the time being.

Going to add some kind of stock looking scoop or grill to it later...

This was all done by hand with a angle grinder (flap disk) and some crappy sandpaper + spray paint. Hood was already spray painted when i got it so whatever.

Areas cut under the hood, little more than needed. Took this picture before cleaning it or painting so you can see where i cut a little more clearly:
