Back in the 60's cars all had full frames. It also made them very heavy. Around the mid seventies emissions stuck its nasty hand in the automotive world and cut down high HP engines. As HP decreased the cars got slower due to weight. I don't know who did it first, but the car manufacturers designed cars without a full frame. Basically what they did was remove the frame in the middle of the car and some cars only have the frame up front. They call it the subframe. They got away with this by strengenthening the floorbooard (making it thicker) the subframes attached to. This made cars lighter and the underpowered engines of the late 70's and early 80's could push/pull a lighter car easier and faster. The only full framed automobiles I have seen are trucks these days. They sell subframe connectors for cars with subframes. The subframe connectors link the rear subframe (and sometines nothing if there isn't a rear subframe) to the front subframe making the car more stiff. Some subframes even brace underthe seat bolts and other parts of the floor pan making the car even more resistant to twisting.
