I'm looking at buying an RX4 and wanted to know what were some common issues or spots that rust to look out for.

pretty much the same spots as all the early Jap cars.
look for rust at the bottom of the strut towers where they met the frame rails,look under the battery tray area, look at the front wheel wells especially the drivers side just behind the clutch pedal so pull the carpet and insulation, look at the bottom of both doors along the seals, look around both front and rear glass for rust bubbles behind the chrome trim, rear quarters, spare wheel well inside trunk, and finally both rocker panels, after owning a few these were the usual areas where there can be rust even though some have rust around the rear wheel arches so look at those as well.
