Twin Dizzy MSD ignition connection

So, when hooking up the white wire to the leading points do you connect it to both sets of points? I figure you probably do, just want to verify before I get it all wired up and do it wrong.

The second set of points were used only under specific conditions including for warm up. This was controled by the number 1 control box under the passenger side dash and the number 2 control box in the trunk.

The wiring for those points and the 2 control boxes gave me nothing but problems once I started disabling the air pump and the emision controls.

I suspect the conversion using the points and an MSD may be a little more complex.

I've explored this for a twin dizzy 12a I hope to build and have determined the best options are to get away from the points. I think the internals from a s4 13b ignition sensors can be modified to fit the twin dizzy, but not with maintaining the mechanical or vacuum advance. That was leading me to either a mega squirt to control ignition or running with a locked advance on a full bridgy.

I don't think its simple, but I've been wrong many times in my life. Interested in how you make out with this one!

I don't mind having the points, and the emissions stuff is all removed. so apparently those points can just go away. Works for me.

I made a new bracket out of aluminum that bolts to where the old cold start assist went that the msd box attaches to and has three coils mounted vertically above it. Came out really nice, will have to snap a photo and post it once i get a moment.

Got it all hooked up, still have some wiring to do, didn't want to cut any wires until I got it running right. Fired right up. Funny thing is while I was adjusting the points I took off the trailing rotor and forgot to put it back on. Oops. Even whithout the trailing plugs working, It still ran better than before. Granted I now has new exhaust (roadrace header to 2 1/2" out throught the back) and points, cap rotors, etc. Damn this is a good feeling.

Not sure who you aren't arguing with. Can't we all be friends. j/k. Anyway, car runs sweet with this setup. No regrets, I thought about 2nd gen coils, have a 2nd gen parts car that may be a donor of an engine in the future. But's that's notthe direction I wanted to go. Same with the front cover swap, didn't want to go there. Different strokes/different folks. Doing new wires and plugs next week then the ignition will be completely new. Exhaust is completely new, carb has a new rebuild. Engine and tranny were both rebuilt 1000 miles ago in 1986. My goal with this car is somethink comfortable and reliable I can hop into and go, or even the wife can drive to work if she want. Suspension and bigger brakes are next. Not a race car but aggressive. A 2 sedan will never be a sports car, don't need that, got the 8 for that. I mostly just use this as stress relief from work, and time away from restoring this old farm house. Damn it's cold this morning.

By the way, where you put the msd box, aren't you concerned about excessive water coming in the cowl vents, granted in the engine compartment isn't waterproof, but it's not directly under the showerhead. I looked at that and liked the placement, but was concerned about the water. Thanks again for the points wiring info. greatly appreciated.

yeah i had thought about water but its kinda tucked under the cover panel and i poured water on the wndshield and water barely got near it but mph+rain will be diff i could caulk the box shut then water proof the wires.

you have the same plans as i did with my rx2 but it had a coolent leak and that was the end of that lol.

you should post up pictures of your rx2 would love to see it.

cheers

Just dont install it upside down and you should be fine and no need for caulk. Water proof the wires?

So, which plugs would be ideal for leading with my current setup, any suggestions? I like to get some this week, figure stock NGKs for trailing, but, don't know if there would be a better option since the leading is now directfire.
