trans shortening

Well I found a 1984 gsl-se trans after having a 4 speed sold to me from that POS in Long Beach, and I need to shorten the shifting mechanism to fit the hole in the floor board of my rx3
. The honest person who sold me the trans gave me an additional top mount and tube(cool) he also selling the motor a 6 port 13b that is belived to be the gsl-se motor if anybody interested.
Now I'm looking for info on the move if anybody has pictures or just info I would appreciate it---MadChad.

right off the top of my head

the forward set of holes is cut from the feet of the remote shifter mech

the tube is withdrawn from over the inner selection rod of gsl-se box

103 mm or so is trimmed from your inner rod, and the grub screw hole for fixing the sifter mech is redriiled and tapped
( sometimes its just a roll pin, and a grub screw will do to replace it )

and the outer tube is shortened appropriately and re-installed with rubber seal

--EFFECTIVELY , the whole shifter mech jumps forward 1 set of mount holes
( its forward ones cut off )

you have to beware a small locating nub may need a grind, or the shifter mech shimmed up to clear it

oval the shifter mech mount holes lightly, and fit loosely
select all gears before tightening it in the happy spot

- simplest of tools will do you
and its surprisingly easier than it reads
measure twice, cut once

nice line there doc!

nah, use TII tranny if you're going turbo but for N/A, a GSL-SE is more than sufficient, and besides, you dont want that added weight of TII tranny.

and shortening it is nice but I just hate to over extent my arm just to shift. I didnt even shortended the remote shifters in both my 75 and 73 and Im able to mod the shifter console. the only regret I have is that I used a 81-82 tranny housing when I modded a miata 5speed tranny for my 73 RX-3. I should have used an 83+ in order to use a short shift kit from mazdatrix. pix below

Just did this for a REPU. The above is exactly what I did. I did not have to grind the nubs off though, I just pulled them out with vice grips.

You will need to grind off the rear, driver side mount. It is n longer needed and it will interfere with the part bolting up.

shorting

Thanks for the "how to's" I'm going to give this a shot well not a shot but I'll stay away from the sawsall and the 7&7's untill the critical things are done. and Wacky dont forget I've got long arms so the reach shouldn't be a problem ---MadChad.

I just remembered that Arnel shortned a remote shifter for my other set of GSL-SE tranny. If you want it, come over and I will lend it to you to copy. it aint hard to do with the right tool.

I think i still have the shortened shift rod and cut housing I was going to put on a spare tranny but never did. PM me if interested. The rod was drilled on a mill so i know the hole is in the right position/size.

shifter rod

Thanks for the offer, but I've completed the shortening and it all works. the only problem now is there is a crack in the front seal housing a $ 60. part from mazdatrix, just need to take care of a anniversary and a birthday of my better side first---MadChad.

Explanation is for a TII but it is the same procedure as a N/A transmission. The only difference between the two is that the collar on the shaft of a TII has a spring pin that holds it in where as the the collar for the N/A is held in by a 10mm bolt.

side by each

I finished the trans.(1984 gsl-se) Sunday. then stood it up on the bench bellhousing side down right next to the 79'-80' four speed and these trans. share alot of the same pieces except the tail housing. and it looks to me like I could of have swapped the two tailhousings and shortened it that way. I may still try this to see if its possible ---MadChad.
