swapping dual to single ditributor?

out of curiosity how hard would it be to install the later single-distributor breakerless ignition stuff on my stock dual-distributor 12A in the RX-2?

It looks like the motor's front cover is going to have tto be off, is this something you take the motor out of the car to do?

I think you would have a hard time doing it in the car. The engine realy needs to be laying on its back when you remove the front pully and cover. It is an easy swap though.

I did one without pulling the engine out. U'll have to drain the oil and remove the oil pan, or at least drop it down in front to get the front cover off.

Any '74 or later front cover can be used. You'll need to tap threads into one of the bolt holes in the front cover and use a larger bolt as a plug. Or atleast that's what I did. I used a 10 x 1.25 or 1.5 tap (both are common Mazda thread pitches). Also, one of the front cover bolt holes on the engine under the water pump mounting area won't be used. It can be filled with silicone to prevent oil from leaking upward as it gets sprayed off of the counterweight.

That ought to be enough info to get you started.

What do you do about the thrust bearing on the front of the e shaft? Is there a way to hold it in place to put the pulley back on - without it dropping and getting crushed?

wow, thanks for the info, sounds very doable but I think I'll pull the motor to do it so for now I'll gather the parts for this and the gearbox and exhaust and then pull it and do it all at once I think.
