Thanks for posting this, I was going to ask the same question myself. I've seen a lot of people with old Toyotas and Datsuns using suspension stuff from other cars, I think its just a matter of the shock size, and there's gotta be another car with shocks similar to the RX-2. I was thinking of shocks made for the 84-87 Corolla's (AE86), I've seen a lot of TE27 (71-74 Corolla) guys swapping suspension stuff from them, and I think the RX-2 suspension set-up is a lot closer to the AE86, TE27's had leaf springs. My dream set-up would be Tokico's latest: the HTS short-stroke shocks (45-way adjustable!) that they make for the AE86 and Ground Control coil-overs front and rear. It'd also be nice to have an adjustable lateral rod and 4-links suited for a lowered car, roll center adjusters for the front would be cool too. My friend has an AE86 and I want to take some measurements on his suspension components next time he comes over.

rx3 is very different on the rear. the rx2 has what looks like a strut on the rear.
i am sure i can build something but fiinding someone
else who has done it before would make it easier.

lol, thats what I get for having a shitty book.
I have seen a site though that was trying to sale some rear shocks one time. So just thought they came with shocks. After looking at a good old hanynes book it is struts. You learn something new everyday.

Only other car I can think of in this time preiod that had that same setup where z cars. Its kind of wired for me to think about my 2 having struts over shocks.

Ok now this item makes more since to me - http://www.nopionline.com/ecat2004/d...01972&vaffid=0

Mmmm, I wonder if all 4 are adjustable.
Sorry about the shock thing, I really thought they had shocks on them. Thanks for the insight.

That kit looks cool, but like it only allows the front to adjust, but it still does not answer the question about Rx2 rear shocks?

They are impossible to find. No one has them. You can have yours rebuilt though. Tripoint can do it, as well as a couple of other places that are authorized to work on Koni's. Give them a call and get the details.

P.S. I just sold a brand new set of koni's front and back for an RX 2. $650 for the set.....

I bought the last pair of rear gas shocks that classic garage had last year. I called koni in Atlanta a couple of years ago and they have none and can not make anymore oh I called about the coil overs. Kill No Cone I have the ground control kit on my car and you can adjust all 4(four). I have a set of oil(not gas) rear shocks I took off last year and I believe they are Monroe but I am not sure(I'm at work). If you are real serious about your car handling check out www.proshocks.com as I was going to have them build a set but I do not drive hard enough to make them worth it. I usually find my parts on the Aussie forum that you can not get anymore and they are true rotor heads.

I actually picked up Koni oranges from classicgarage about a year and a half ago. I am also running the GroundControl coil-over kit, although I had to add an extra 3" sleave to the top of those included in the kit as it was WAY TO LOW in the back, with NO travel...now it sits fine, about 1.5 fingers above the tire. Ride is a little stiff but not so much as it disturbs traction over uneaven payment.

Even though I haven't actually put them in yet, an ITA Rx2 racer says the Tokico Illumina IT shocks fit in the Rx2 housing...I will let you know, I'm gong to be trying it in about a week. I currently have the Koni's available from RB.

Also going in is a set of the K-Mac camber plates and full Noltec bushes! I'll try to get pics up if someone can host them.

jaime-I have the rx7 camber plates and I had to use toyota MR2 rear gas struts in my front because the RX2 where too large for the bearings(ground control told me what to use). The rears I put longer springs so it did not sit to low but as you say still good ride. Post the pics of the noltec bushings as I got mine 2(two) days ago also. I work too much so I do not get any time off but I will pot my pics IF I get mine on first. Do not count on it.

Since RX-2's have struts all around, I wonder if it's possible to modify some aftermarket coil-overs for an FC or something to fit. I've seen a few 1st gen owners in Japan using coil-overs made for the FC in the front, so they must be at least close to the right size, obviously they couldn't use the coil-overs in the rear without major modifications, it really only be feasible on an RX-2.

Most of those SA owners in Japan are also using the FC crossmember....I remeber a 13B PP w/Motec had full FC front suspension, but it had the crossmember and the aluminum control arms!

Anything is possible for an upgrade. Im heading that way once im done with the FB blow thru upgrade. Most of the 510's, here in LA, have modified front struts to accommodate for other car's strut inserts (say BMW). They cut and remove say 2" from the strut housing and re-welded it back. This will allow them to lower the car and at the same time, retain a smooth ride.

Charles,

It looks like we should be able to find something that will work on your
car. We did have an application for this car at one point so I have
most of the measurements already available for it. How are you going to
be using the car at this point? Also, what kind of spring rates are you
going to use with the Ground Control setup? If you could, I would like
to know a couple of dimensions that I can not find on the build sheet
that I have. What is the bolt size that goes on the bottom of the rear
shock?

Also, how high is the spring seat on the body of the shock (measure from
the center of the lower bolt to the spring seat)? This doesn't have to
be to the thousandth of an inch or anything since you're using a
coilover sleeve.

Finally, what is the diameter of the front housings that you're using?
Are these still the factory units and are you shortening them at all?
Please give me some more details on this. Thanks for writing.

Gordon

This is an email I got back from Koni today.
Looks like I might be able to get a set made.
Dose anyone want to help me out with some of what he is asking me for measurements?
Maybe if this goes well, maybe we could see about a group buy or something..

I have the old stock rear shocks if anyone is interested...they can be revalved and refilled with a heavier weight oil for more dampening.

yes measure the full extended length from the center of
the eye at the bottom to the top of the extended ram.
then measure the eye to the top of the body.
then the eye to the top of the ram pushed all the way in.
also the diameter of the shaft, body and hole in the eye.
lastly the eye to the middle of the spring perch.
this should be all that one should need to know
to find a reasonable replacement.
both the stock and konis should measure almost the
same i would think.
