I installed a 13B in an MG Midget which previously had an RX-2 12A and top mounted starter tranny in it. The 13B and transmission I used were both out of my REPU. I didn't need to change front covers or oil pans or anything. I suspect the RX-4 or Cosmo 13B could be used as well (the oil pans and front covers are the same, but you might need to remove some oil level sensors from the pan). Note: my REPU tranny is a 4 speed. The old ribcase style 5 speeds were slightly longer and would not fit the existing mounting holes in my MG.

jeff, not to go against what you are saying.....but it is not possible to use a "regular" 13b oil pan. just look under the rx2. the oilpan may be able to be installed backwards using the same oilpan, but it is going to need some modifications. just pick up a used gsl-se oil pan for like $15-30. the mg is an entirely different car. and the front cover just makes for easy instal on factory motor mounts. they will be pushed a little forward, but this is the easiest way.

I thought the rotary cars all got round taillights?

Not the 616 or 808 which I believe is what he has. The RX3-SP and later model RX3s (74+?) also had square tail lights.

in 74 the rx2 had square. and what smeagol said about the 808 and 616 is true, but as you said...."ROTARY" cars....these were the piston version of the rx3 and rx2 respectfully. same thing goes for the 1200, the piston version of the r100

as for your quesrion (rudirx7) i am using a 12a trany from a 1st gen. i have not gotten around to putting in one of the fc tranys i have waiting.

I wasn't sure about the oil pan for obvious reasons (not familier with the cross member of an RX-2).

Were you refering to the RX-2 twin dizzy front cover? My MG's RX-2 engine had a single dizzy front cover installed.

no the front cover is not the twin dizzy you need. you just need a single. the reason being is it has the mounts on this cover. you would be able to use a 13b cover, but some tap and die would be involved. it is just easier to swap it to a 12a cover. only takes but a few minutes and makes it that much quicker. if you need one, i have a few. oh, wait...youhave one also, you are pulling out a 12a...so there you go, you are half way there. i used a 6 port 13b with a holley 650 double pumper (mechanical secondaries) the intake manifold had to be fabricated out of pipes and an original 6 port intake man. i will post a pic of it asap. also used a Nos plate for some fun
i am hoping to get a 6port intake from jaytech through this guy who is friends with jay. this will look much nicer.

Of course...sorry, I figured most people knew the 1200/616/808 were the piston counterparts of the R100/RX2/RX3.

if your rx2 has those tail-lights then it should also have a single dizzy 12a that uses front engine mounts which a 13b will bolt straight on to. Use an rx4 or rx5 sump and simply reverse it (it will need some holes re-drilled) but it should fit (seal the front right hand side really well... otherwise it may leak oil).
This is how I did it to my 1973 rx2 - I used the 1974 and later main crossmember and engine mounts as my earlier car had a side mounted twin dizzy engine.
The gearbox cross member will probably need to be custom fabricated - so to tail-shaft.
If you can't source the sump pan, have someone weld the 12a pan to the 13b sumps' frame.
Off the shelf 13b extractors should fit. I had an rx7 late 1st gen ignition system and a mazda b series truck diff centre - 4.4 ratio and rx4 rear drums.

There are plenty of places still making after market accessories / replacement parts in Australia as they are still very popular. Try
Selectmaz - they can do body kits and brake, suspension replacements as well. Plus the value of the aussie dollars SUCKS at the moment and it might be cheaper to buy from here.

I find out that I need an other engine crossmember to install an 13B.I heard that the crossmember from the RX3 fits,is that right ?
Has everyone an idea where I can find the rearfinisher ???

In the next weeks I will parting out an 616 Sedan(RX2) and an 818(808)Sedan(RX3). For parts send me a mail....

Yes, we had the 616 here in the US. The 74 RX-2 had the different tail lamps.

I find out in the last weeks that mazda sold the most RX2s from 70-73 in the US. I think thats my problem to find this rearfinisher ,74 and later modells of RX2s are really rare in the US. Is the 618 the same like the 616 ???

Hi Smeagol,

i just purchased year 1973 Mazda 808. How come the engine is not a rotary engine ? I think what they sold here in indonesia do not come with 10A engine. instead, i was told that it is fitted with 2L engine.

Do you know anything about this engine ? can this engine be rebuild and upgrade ? just in case for my spares. i'm planning to put 13bt rew engine though. who knows if the 2L engine can be rebuild, might plan to build a race engine. Kindly advice thanks.

1200, 616, 808 were all pistion verizon of r100, rx2, rx3. Since u purchase an 808. It come with a piston motor. For u to do a swap to a rotary u will need to get or fab up the cross member.

I think you're a little late on those parts. This thread was started in 2002. LOL. What are you looking to get for the set? Post up some pics an a thread in the F/S section in the old school parts. I'm sure they'll sell if the price is rite.

I can add something to this thread. The MG finally got its very own engine purpose built for it. Installed Friday and test cranked yesterday. 13B, of course. No more RX-2 stuff, but I kept the RX-2 front mount bar and cut an oval slot to look more like a 74 and later (it saves weight). Aluminum RB flywheel and FC waterpump round out the package. No more 30 pound RX-2 flywheel to do low RPM burnouts...
