RX-4 SCCA ITA road racer restoration
So as you guys who dwell in the 2nd Gen build threads may have noticed (or perhaps not), I have not been posting much progress on the car as of late. That's not really to say that work has stopped, rather my main focus has gone to a gem I am in the process of aquiring. It's a little complicated, but bare with me for a moment...
It all starts a few weeks back at our regions SCCA Christmas dinner where all of us are sitting back, enjoying our evening, reflecting on the year, and contemplating what's to come next season. Sometime during the night I had mentioned I'm looking for another trans for the FC. Now our senior-most member and long time road racer approaches me on his way out saying he has a couple transmissions that I could look at and buy from him. Sweet, just what I need.
The following day I head over there with my buddy who I always work on my car with and we go into the field where all his junk cars are kept. He has an FC and an FB right next to each other and says there they are. So we look them over and start making plans to get the FC out and getting it t his barn so we can get the trans out. Well on our way back to the barns he mentions that he also has an RX-4 road course car that he would sell me.
I wasn't really there for that car so I wasn't really interested in buying it, but I agree to go look at it and on our way in he said that I would have to completely put it back together, but he has all the parts including the engine and trans and two spare cars. His asking price? A whopping one thousand dollars. My heart dropped, my eyes opened twice their size, and right then and there I agreed.
Looking over the car, it's already stripped down, caged, and painted. It is, however, completely taken apart. So we head to the front barn and he shows me the engine and trans he has for it. An old school carbureted 13b running and RB road race header and centerforce clutch assembly. It's been rebuilt and has three hours of racing on it. Being an ITA class car, the internals are stock, so three hours isn't much of anything. After he gets done showing my around some other parts we agree upon paying over time since I'm a broke college kid working a petty fast food job.
Fast forward to this weekend, and we start gathering parts and getting them cleaned and ready for when we can move the shell. So next weekend will begin the process of finding all the steering and suspension components (brakes too obviously) in order to turn it into a rolling chassis. The front struts have been modified and are running some nice adjustable sleeves with some form of coils (haven't been able to look into everything yet to recognize brands) while the rear are fiberglass mono leaf springs with polyurethane bushings. So far, soooooo good.
We will begin to know more as the weeks go by, but for now this is what I've got as far as pictures. I did have better ones from using a friends camera, but it kinda fell with the tri pod and put a $235 damper in my plans to pay for a new 18-55mm VR lens and filter... So enjoy and I'm really excited to start building this car back up.

There are ALWAYS more cars waiting to come out of hiding! Case in point.... Congrats! I am a bit concerned with an Rx4 on a fast food income budget -(please do not be offended, NOT my intent)- its the fact that these cars are full of unobtanium. It sounds as if you have a great base of enthusiasts around you, though. Best of luck!
