Question RX-2 side skirts?

Has anyone ever heard of a side skirt made for the RX-2? Mine came with these odd looking rubber side skirts on it, and I am trying to decide wether or not I like them. Wanted to get some input from you guys. They are a flexible rubber similar to the bottom section of the front airdam, and I imagine they were originally put on the car to keep the lines of the airdam flowing towards the rear of the car.

I have attached some pics for reference, the 1st is how the car currently is (with them removed) and the others are before pics from when they were installed. I'm leaning towards keeping them even though they don't seem very functional, but I'd want to trim them down at least 2" as they seemed a bit low how they were. Also, right now there are a bunch of ugly bolt holes on that little flange hanging down underneath the car from where they were attached.

Suggestions?

Thanks,
Mike

Cool

You have the spoiler that I have been trying to locate for ever and I know the maker of that spoiler is no longer in business. Oh well you asked about the side skirts I have never liked the rubber ones but I have to admit I put black plastic ones on my car. Check it out for the difference.

Nice lookin' RX-2!

Yeah, I lucked out and all the aftermarket body parts came on the car when I got it. I think I am going to end up trimming the rubber skirts a little, only thing is they're like 1/4" thick so I'm trying to figure the best way to cut them straight without mangling them up.

They are an RX3 item, from the factory - meant to be glued to the doors / guards to, according to Mazda make the car look like it sits closer to the ground, and protect the car from stones.

I have a spare set and a 1/2 of the skirts, your car is the only other I have ever seen with them.......! Here is a pic from the factory brochure; http://mrec.rotary.net.nz/brochures/rx3/rx3e.jpg

You have the trim hanging down, should sit above the stainless trim strip that runs along the sills. Worth keeping and using, but I would not chop them, I would mount them as Mazdas intended.

Ah, I see what you mean.. hmm, that is interesting. Unfortunately the previous owner removed the stainless trim strip so I am not positive how I would attach mine. I wouldn't want to drill any holes in the car.

I just measured and they are a bit short (end to end) for an RX-2. Either mine were trimmed in the past (don't appear to be) or these are RX-3 specific and the guy just used them in a different way. I just noticed, the photo you provided only shows a part # for RX-3s so I guess I assumed corretly. Heh.

They also would have to be cut to allow the door to open.

Hmm, well if anyone would want to trade these for something that would fit an RX-2 I'd do that. Otherwise I'll end up trimming them to fit my car as they're about 2" too wide right now.

Mike

I was meaning that they sit ABOVE the trim strip - and are glued flush onto the panel - no holes or anything.

There are three parts, and made for the coupe only - door and two short pieces either side of the door. I don't think that they were made for an RX2 - but at the end of day who would actually know.......! If you like them go for it.

Yep, unfortunately they don't look right on a RX-2 when put in the proper place on the lower door sill area. Guess that's why the previous owner mounted them under the car. Right now I'm not really sure what I want to do.. I want to put something over all the drilled holes but then again I feel bad chopping up some hard to find factory RX-3 part.

You should consider finding the original stainless strips, or just fill the holes and repaint the sill... those holes attract rust - mine are long gone.

Put the rubber strips on the shelf, who knows they may become collectable one of these years???????

Far as I know, yeah. I've never seen a '74 close up though. From what I've seen the only main difference is the tail lights.

Hey Crit, did you ever work out your speedo cable problem? I installed that replacement one I had yesterday and I think it broke again! (after driving only about 500 feet!) I suspect my odo gauge itself is screwed up somehow. I'm about to go take it off again and inspect the damage.

Anyhow, I found a few places that can custom make the innards of the speedo cable so that may be an option.

Here's a pic of my car @ SS7, looks much better now with the new wheels/tires I think.

The power brake booster is different, plus the drivetrain changed a lot, with bottom-mount starters and such. Engine and tranny mounts moved (I'm told). The dash structure and gauges are different, as are the taillights, but that's about it. I found a guy in Aus that has a few sets of RX-2 rubbers (doors, windows, trunk, window moldings, etc) and I'm looking at organizing a group buy. If you want molded rubber trim, let me know. These have real molded corners at the top of the door, not just wrap-around stuff like I have on my car now.

As for the speedo, I bought a 75 808 speedo cable, knowing that they changed the guts of the cars in 74. I have no idea if it'll even work, but it was a rare shot at a factory speedo cable, so I snagged it cheap. If y'all know where I can find suspension bushings, shocks, or a front valence, let me know.

I'd be interested in new RX-2 rubbers.. how much will a set cost?

Turns out my speedo cable was fine, I think the gear on the tranny got stripped out somehow. My odo gauge must be really screwy to do that to the gear.
