RX-2 custom exhaust
Just curious, anyone else out there have a custom exhaust on their RX-2?
I just got back from having one made for my '73 at a local exhaust shop. I had them put on a true dual exhaust (2" piping) from the RB race header all the way back into a 5x8" dual 2.25" inlet single 2.5" outlet Magnaflow muffler. This is on a stock port '79 RX-7 12A. Basically, I was trying to model it after the Racing Beat dual exhaust system that used to be available for these cars. I was going to have them put 2 bullet (presilencers) inline but the guy convinced me to first try it with just straight piping, then if I thought it was too loud they could later add in some presilencers. I also mentioned the possibility of welding a small cross pipe inbetween the piping which I've heard mentioned in the past but they didn't seem to think that would make much of a difference so that idea was scrapped. Any ideas?
First impressions are: much louder in the 2-4k RPM range but I don't really mind it. I'm sure there's more power now as it previously had a stock '79 RX-7 exhaust on it with the cat, which also scraped on about every speed bump I went over. Haven't drive the car very much yet but I'm excited to go crusing around to road test the new exhaust.

I have dual 2.25 pipes, 2 blown out glasspacks (soon to be replaced by the magnaflow presilencers), collecting into a 2.5 Thermal 18" long. Loud, but so what, never pulled over for loud exhaust on a 13B streetport.

just put on a 2.5" straight pipe in to what almost looks like a stock muffler (basically a baffle can)
on my 71 rx2 with a supercharged street ported 13B I think i might have to add a
pre silencer, it is a little loud, time will tell i guess.
almost all done and hope to be able to drive it soon.

Tried to snap a few pics. I've considered maybe painting the muffler with that flat black high temp paint, but maybe I'll just leave it be. Anyone ever tried that?
Jeez I need to figure out what's up with the diff. and fix that sway bar.
Yeah, I'm thinking adding presilencers probably won't make much of a difference if your car is still loud with them. I have a similar type exhaust on my RX-7 with presilencers (though probably blown out by now) and that exhaust is way louder than the one on the RX-2.

Glad to hear you got your exhaust on Matt. I use two Racing Beat presilencers into a Racing Beat prima flow main muffler which gives me NO METAL SOUND(two cycle ring-a-ding) and a nice mellow V8 sound at idle but still louder than stock and a good rich sound through the gears but you can still tell it is a rotary. I used to run a 24 inch megaphone with a 4 inch outlet when I raced round de round so I know a loud exhaust a 3 foot flame at the end of the straight AH the good old days.
