Great idea, that's all I can tell you. I want to put a rotary into an 87 Porsche 944, and I'm running into the same trouble you are. We'd probably see almost the same performance gains as well. But anyways, can't help you, but very interesting idea.

I remember seeing a Miata with a 13B one time in either SCC or Superstreet. Does anyone know what issue? I looked back through but don't see it.

I rode in one with a 13bt in it. It was fast. The guy who built it owns a shop in sacramento ca. or around that area.

Actually, I did use the search but didn't find any useful information. Most of the threads are about the next gen miata that may have a rotary.

roto-miata

the shop in sacramento is checkpiont motorspots. I think its in rancho cordova. Try info I don't know their #. You could also try a web search. I saw the miata they did and talked to them about it they were pretty open with info. Give them a call. The problem with the swap is all in the front crossmember. You can get the motor to bolt to the tranny and making motor mounts is not that big a deal. the plumbing and wiring is easy enough. That crossmember is a problem. a rx7 carries its motor higher in its chassis. so with a miata you run into clearence problems with the crossmember and steering rack. their are two ways to deal with this 1ry sump=expensive 2:hack the hell out of the crossmember and move steering rack=flexing chassis and bumpsteer. The miata's not a stiff chasis to begin with. the later is what checkpiont did. they charged the guy something like $11,000 for the hole enchilada. He supplied the car.

From what i've read about a little history of the rotary in some recent car mag, Mazda purposely put the steering rack in the way of a rotary engine. They didn't want people buying the less expensive miata only to drop a 13B in it, they thought it would steal sales from the FD. So they had engineers rework the steering to put it purposely in the way to make it wicked hard (yeah, i'm from massachusetts) to put a rotary in the car
