The RE86 project....broke man style

Well ill start with a little forefront i guess. I got my corolla about two years ago or more. I put a wide body on it suspension yadda yadda, re build the 4age only to have it bend some valves. Well out of frustration i sold about everything i could on the car(which is biting me in the ***) only to come to the realization of hey why dont i put this 12a i have in the thing. so here i am, its going to take a while with limited funds but i figured id throw it up here.

So the plans are, get this 12a mounted with an aluming motor plate im making. Finish the 8.8 swap and add either a 4.88 or 5.12ish gear, ditch the nikki for some webers and maybe run it on e85 because that ***** awesom.
when i got it..riced out and all

when it was done and driving

the 8.8 in progress

and currently how the engine sits

Cool project!

I would have kept the hood though. I think that is nerdy cool.

Looks like quite the start! I just picked up a TE72 around Hamilton and have a 13b on the stand that needs rebuilt. Hoping to complete it eventually and possibly go the e85 route as well, but moving at a similar pace with limited funds. Would be awesome to check it out as you progress.

Not sure if it was listed there or not, but found it on Craigslist. It's an oh so lovely brown sport coupe with an auto. Have you had any problems with clearing the firewall? See the 8.8 rear, but what transmission are you using?

With the cross member dropped about 1.5" it clears just fine. The engine isn't that far back so it has tons of room. And for now I have the fb transmission.

How does the 8.8inch rear differ from stock in terms of of the driveshaft measurements? Guess that would also depend on differences between the fb and fc transmissions as well as how far the rotary is from the firewall. Any more progress?

Well my bell housing is probably a good 3+ in from the firewall at the top from the bolts to the engine. For the driveshaft I took the fb trans yoke and got the proper u joint to use the corolla drive shaft. And I'll do the same in the rear with a mustang yoke. Length wise it seems to be about the same.

And I haven't done much, put stock front suspension on so I could roll it, and I'm waiting on some tube to be bent for the radiator mount.

Thanks everybody, I haven't had a chance to do much lately other than patch some rust and cut out some unneeded steel. I need to come up with oil cooler fittings to get rid of my beehive. Stay tuned
