AZ Project Pathy

Hey guys, I plan on taking a 1990-1995 Nissan Pathfinder and dropping in a 20b turbo. I want an engine that doesn't have any crap all over the engine. I want a clean looking motor and turbo setup. Now for the drivetrain... I'm going to use an adapter kit and put a modified TH400 chevy transmission with a hurst ratchet shifter. After the custom driveline comes a 12 bolt rear with hotchkis suspension. Yes I know their is definatly going to be some fab work which is fine haha!
I plan on doing street/strip with this vehicle as well as some road racing. And hopfully by 2012 the Spectre 341 challenge in Nevada!

One of the reasons that I came to this forum is to find out how I can make 400-450hp with the 20b. And also to post the pics as I buy everything!

Things I need (will be updated):

1990-1995 Pathy Automatic...Hopfully find one on craigslist for $500 or less.

20b Rotary with turbo ( I need to know where to buy an engine that I'm looking for. I will note in pics below)

TH400 Adapter

TH400 Trans

Hurst Shifter

12 Bolt Rear

Hotchkis suspension

Pics:

Here is what I don't want!

why the 20b i mean it will be awsome but why not just a v8. most 20bs are gonna be used and need to be cleaned up all those wires you need unless you start getting new ecu and fuel management and stuff like that for what you want you could build a v8 all clean and easy or better yet just get a crate motor you could also build a engine that responds like a rotary if you take a 400 block and put a 350 crank in it

i'd have to agree. I mean I put a 13b in my sammi but the stock hp is only 50hp so its a big difference and pretty simple. 20B is going to be rough, but goodluck!

I would love to put a v8 in fact I've wanted to do that forever, I first saw the Nissan patrols with their big twin turbo BBC's in the Abu Dhabi sand drags (forgive me if I spell it wrong!) The problem that I quickly found was that I didn't have the room from firewall to grill, and I really didn't want to modify the firewall. Because, I want to keep the original interior, hehehe sleeper! Well until they hear it fire up

Anyways I just decided to go with the 20b instead of modding the VG30E that came in it for a couple reasons. One I would have to spend ridiculous amounts of money to get the same 400+hp that I want. Two I would still have to change the rear end because the stock Nissan rear end won't hold up to 400hp. And third I would have to custom wire the entire ecu to accept the NIStune software that is for the 300zx because even though they have the same engine, they share completely different wiring harnesses!

I also have another question... I want a single gt42r turbo or something compatible for 400hp. What do I need to make it a single turbo? Because I heard that the 20b came with twins. Do I need to make a custom turbo header? Or are their pre made ones available?

i am not 100 percent sure but i think a 20b is longer then or close to the length of a v8 either way your modding stuff to get it all to fit i have seen v8 pathfinders and it seems easier to go v8 then 20b and cheaper for parts too if we can put ls1 engines in our rx7s then i am pretty sure it will fit in a pathfinder i have a friend who used to have one in that year range and a small block v8 would fit fine and it would be easy to get to your desired number for power with complications of turbo or supercharge just all motor and done

Yes but I love the rotary sound, plus I want to see the look on the person next to me at the stop light when I pull up and they hear the brap brap brap of the awesome 20b!

When you buy used 20b's, they usually come in a long block configuration (like in your pic). You remove what's not needed and go from there. And a gt42 is too big for your power goals. Considering your vehicle choice, you need something smaller to spool faster to create torque earlier in the power band for your heavier vehicle. Gt35r would be perfect and still have enough for 500 rwhp. Who's gonna do the rebuild and all the work?

why not put the same amount of money into a 13b rew engine and make more power..
altho you seem pretty set on the 20b. expect over 3500 for a used long block like your picture then thousands more rebuilding etc

cool idea i will be watching for pics

good luck

Thats what I was trying to decide on, a gt42r or a gt35r haha! Thanks for the info! And your right, they are heavy! My current pathy stock weighs about 5200 pounds without me! I just don't like the sound of the 13b! I don't know why, I just don't. I'm trying to find a designated "rebuild kit" for one of these 20b's. Any help on a reliable kit? And yes I was thinking of just digging in to the engine myself, with the help of an engine manual of coarse! But I may need some pointers. I'll try and hit youtube for some info and maybe get lucky and find someone rebuilding their 20b haha!
