Old School Cosmo's Found Rusting Away in Japan!

Justin Hyde — A Japanese photoblogger stumbled across this field of ten first-generation Mazda Cosmo sports cars in the countryside, slowly dissolving into the earth. It's obvious someone doesn't realize what's in their backyard.

The Cosmo was the first Mazda to sport a rotary engine, with its two-rotor setup good for 110 hp and a 0-to-60 mph run of just under 9 seconds. Only 1,519 were built, and only two are known to exist in the United States — one in the meat forks of none other than Jay Leno.

Recent sales of unrestored models have sought $45,000; given the booming interest in Japanese sports cars from the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, a mint Cosmo might be worth more than double that.

I know this location. The owner has been buying up cosmos for parts. He restores them and sells them. near by he has shop with 5 or 6 that are at different states of being restored.

so I would not call it a waste or sad site.

Jalopnik likes to make up stories to match pictures they find.

The two I can think of are the stories about the guy who sold everything to get a Lambo and drive it across the US, and the amazing barn find on the purchased estate.

The Lambo story was found later to be a total fabrication by the driver, which Jalopnik bought hook line and sinker even though it was a ridiculous story.

The barn find was reported to be some amazing collection of cars found by someone who purchased an estate and opened up a locked building to find a massive barn full of rare cars. Only the real story was that the pictures were taken by a photographer hired by an owner to catalog his collection of rare cars.

Might this be the location for the cosmo that was being followed in arizona in recent rebuild on forums?
Mention of guy in jp that it was sourced from has similar yard in story write up sounds like? .......food for thought as that would be an interesting turn out to random cosmos pic on site.
If it is.... don't see those rusting away from what I read in the story
