motor/trans swap info.

I am getting a 1980 Rx7 S1 in the next couple of weeks. I am going to use the motor and trans for my Rx2, then sale the shell. What I need from you guys is some information about something's.

What do I need to have done to the 5-speed out of the 80's rx7 to be able to put it in my Rx2 with out cutting a new hole? I want to use the stock trans hole already in the car.

When I got my Rx2 it didn't have a motor or trans, so I have no idea how it's held in. I don't know what is needed to blot to the motor, to hold it in place. Would I be able to use what the Rx7 has, or do I need to track down someone that has the stuff for an Rx2.

I've never owned an rx2, only 3's so this is just a guess. The tranny should fit just fine with no mods to it, u may have to fabricate a mount for it tho. I dought u'll be able to use the front mount for the engine either, I know on the '82 and later ones the 4 bolt holes where it bolts to the front cover are offset to one side and u will need one that has them centered in the mount like in the rx3 and 4. U could get someone to cut and weld that one end to shorten it to work.

My RX-2 came with a 13-B but I switched to a 93 bridgeport and an 81+ tranny with miata internals. Had to make my own tranny mount and cut new shifter hole. For the handbrake, I cut a few inches from the middle of a MX-6 handbrake (RX-7’s are side mount and will not work) and welded it back in as it interferes when shifting to 2nd and 4th gear.

You can use pre-81 tranny to avoid cutting new shifter hole. In addition, in case, you find a 76 Cosmo tranny, it will not work also as the rib case is too bulky and will hit the walls around the tranny tunnel.

I had that prob with a '74 rx4 tranny in my 3, I just put a screw jack in there and spread it open so it would go up in there since I was going to have to make a mount anyway.

I hear ya. I should have used a scizzorjack or something to spread my MG Midget's tunnel because going from RX-2 straight ribcase to REPU tilted ribcase gives me little to no clearance. It hits something up in the tunnel when the engine torques to the side while in reverse. Then in forward gears, the pan hits the frame, but that's MG-specific. It'll all be sorted out pretty soon I think.

You have to slot your front motor mounts up and forward since the 13b is longer than the 12a that was in the car. The oil pan has to be turned around and redrilled for the bolts or use a gslse oil pan. If you do not have the original oil pickup tube from the 12a you will need to lengthen the tube(weld in a piece) to pickup the oil in the back. The transmission bracket that holds the mount needs to be made out of a heavy gauge of steel and drill holes for the nuts. The stock driveshaft needs to be cut and balanced to length and a local shop will do it for usuaslly around 60 bucks. I used a deep Moroso oil pan in my RX2 but I had to have a local welder cut and weld my front cross member and works great. Hope this helps.

Did you read the original post?

Kick,

That set up should bolt right in. The tranny will fit. Usually when you are cutting a hole for the tranny it is because you are doing an 13b conversion, and this engine is longer than the original.

This engine, and tranny you are buying will go in with little to no cutting/welding/etc.

I have the front engine cross member you will need to put that motor in if you are interested.

To bad you are so far away. I am selling the engine and trans from my rx2.

I almost did it that way but decided to use a different tranny instead. Kinda felt bad for not using the cosmo tranny since I had the bell housing polished.
